My fingers brushed across the dew-laden leaves of a fern as I stared out into the forest. I was well behind the wards that I had set around the cabin, but I still kept my eyes and ears open for any intruders. The morning was peaceful, with the sun making the canopy above sparkle like green gems when the quiet breeze would pick up. A few birds chirped nearby, hopping among the brambles of a wild blackberry bush, picking off fruit and bugs alike. I needed this moment, this frozen space of time, to breathe and prepare. I knew what I had to do, but I needed one more quiet moment before I threw myself back into the fray.
I also said another goodbye to Margery. I had found some flowers nearby and placed them around a smooth stone, like some sort of headstone. It might seem silly, but it made me feel better that there was at least one little space in this world that held homage to the sacrifice that she had paid to make sure I stayed alive.
A deep sigh blew past my lips. There was no use in wasting any more time. Pulling my gaze from the forest, I turned and headed back inside.
The cabin was warm and comfortable, making me wish I could linger longer within its walls. To my surprise, Alathiel was sitting up in bed. She had a bit of color in her cheeks this morning, and her eyes seemed a bit brighter. There was still a frailty to her, however. She would be in that bed for a couple more days, at least.
I shut the door behind me then took off the jacket that I had put on to ward off the chill of the morning air. âHow are you doing this morning?â I asked. âDid you sleep okay?â I already knew she had. I had only gotten a couple hours of sleep, yet she had been snoring all night.
âYou look like someone who is trying really hard to say something they donât want to say.â
I ignored Alathielâs statement and headed over to the kitchen counter. âI got tea made up if you would like a cup.â I didnât wait on her answer. I filled two cups then took one to her. âHope youâre okay with green tea.â
Alathiel took the cup and narrowed her eyes at me. âDid something happen last night?â
I peered down at the tea, the steam reminding me of the strange mist that had led me to Margery. âI spoke to Margery. Sheâs gone, but I think sheâs happy, at least.â She certainly seemed content, with her lover and her cat at her side. âDo you want something to eat? I can make pancakes or some more oatmeal.â The thought of eating oatmeal again made my stomach churn.
âThe tea is all I need for now. I need to wake up before I can eat anything.â
Guilt swirled in my stomach. I wouldnât be here later to fix her a meal.
âAlathiel â¦â I hesitated, feeling like the worst sort of person.
