CHAPTER 12

Aidoneus’s magical fingers rubbed my shoulders as we stood in the living room of the rental house. The house was similar to the one I’d lived in with Miles, which added to the feelings that bombarded me from the moment we had landed in North Carolina.

The strength and fortitude I’d gained over the past several months seemed to have vanished. But that wasn’t entirely accurate. It was there under the insecurity and doubt Miles had always made me feel.

Aidoneus pressed his lips to my temple. “I can feel your brain working overtime, Queenie. I know better than to tell you to forget about that asshole, so let’s focus on the killer we’re here hunting. Have you heard from Mahon about seeing the shifter? I didn’t have much time with her body, but I did sense something coming from her where I didn’t with the elf.”

That sounded promising. And it made me feel better about taking the time to meet up with Mahon to view the shifter victim. “I have an appointment with Mahon in the morning. That’s our only lead at the moment.”

Tsekani thrust his hands on his hips. “Phoebe Dieudonne`, stop that defeatist attitude right now. Between the evidence you can use to scry, the shifter, and my message on Facebook we will find a new lead.”

My head snapped in Tseki’s direction. “What are you talking about? Why would you leave a message on Facebook?”

“There’s a private group on the platform for members of the magical world. Being the brilliant, best-dressed member of our team, I put a message up there asking for the anonymous caller to contact us again so we can get more information from them."

I smiled at him. “Have I told you how fabulous you are lately?”

Tseki cocked one hip and smirked. “Not in the last six hours. That should have brightened your mood. What’s wrong? Is it that worm that treated you worse than a bug?”

Aidoneus stiffened next to me. It was difficult to ignore, but I wanted my friends to understand. “Miles has always had a way of making me feel like shit. However, it’s not him per se. I’m used to him talking down to me and being a jerk. His comments didn’t affect me much. It’s the reminder of who I used to be when I was married to him.”

Stella picked up the wine bottle from the table to fill my empty glass. “You have no reason to be ashamed of that time in your life, Pheebs.”

I snorted, wishing she was right about that. “Don’t I? How could I let him force me to do over ninety percent of the work raising the kids, including the household chores? And when I didn’t have dinner prepared on time or the laundry done, I was a crappy mother who couldn’t plan for shit. Never mind that I worked fourteen-hour shifts. I was a second-class citizen in my marriage, not a partner.”

Aidoneus cupped my cheeks and looked into my eyes. The rage coming off him nearly knocked me over.
