Chapter Sixteen

Lina

“Crombie found Mataius.”

As soon as the words left her lips, the piece of paper began to burn—no, freeze—her fingers. The cold was so intense it merely felt like it was burning. The resulting pain was immediate, and she released Crombie’s note with a startled cry.

Instead of fluttering to the floor, the stationary burst into dozens of silky black and silver butterflies that flitted around her playfully before disappearing up the chimney.

Nord muttered something under his breath that sounded like ‘fae fuck’, but she couldn’t be sure.

Shaking out her stinging fingers, Lina turned to face the others. “Anyone recognize the address? Is it a warehouse or a club or something?”

Nord frowned and shook his head, Quinn looked thoughtful as if still trying to place it, and Alistair and Finley exchanged uneasy glances.

“What?” Lina asked.

Finley ran a hand down his face. “Delaney runs through a residential neighborhood, but I use the term loosely. You’re as likely to find a row of boarded-up buildings filled with rotting bodies as you are anybody who actually lives there. It’s not a place I’d want to be after dark.”

Lina glanced out the window. “Good thing it’s still midday.”

Nord opened his mouth, but she was ready for him.

“You better not be about to suggest that I sit here with my thumb up my ass while you go looking for him.”

He pressed his lips together, nostrils flaring as he huffed out a breath.

“I don’t know,” Quinn murmured, “could be a good time.”

Lina closed her eyes and suppressed a smile with a slight shake of her head. Fucking Quinn.

“Well,” Lina asked after a beat, “what are we waiting for? Let’s go get the bastard.”

“I don’t think we should run over there half-cocked; we have no idea what’ll be waiting for us. Something like this requires planning,” Finley said.

Lina’s eyes snapped to his. “And I think that twenty some odd years is long enough for a piece of shit like Mataius to get away with murder. I’m done waiting. We have the address. It’s time to end this. Are you really trying to tell me that two Guardians and three animagi aren’t a match for whatever’s out there? Because if you are, then we might as well quit now. No amount of planning will ever be enough.”

Just the thought of her gray-eyed ex sent a shiver down her spine, but it wasn’t fear she felt.

It was soul-deep hatred.

Never, in either of her lives, had she loathed someone as much as she did the Drake heir. He’d betrayed her, used their relationship and her feelings for him to blind her to his true purpose.

While she’d been planning a wedding, he’d been plotting her murder.

It was an unforgivable sin. One that could only be repaid in blood.

A life for a life and all that.

Unfortunately for him, unlike her, he only had the one life to lose.

Finley sighed. “Lina—”

“Come or don’t, Fin,” she said, starting for the door. “I don’t need your permission. I have the address; I’ll go by myself if I have to.
