“She’s definitely in Kentucky,” Sam said when Mary and I arrived at my office. “I’ve confirmed it to my satisfaction since I talked to you.”

“What in God’s name is your mother doing in Kentucky?” I asked.

“I don’t know that yet.”

“I mean, Kentucky…? Your mother?”

“I wasn’t looking there, specifically but I just wasn’t getting any traces in Europe. So I did some searches in the US, assuming that she’d kept the admiral’s last name. Fortunately there aren’t many Gutierrez-Moratins and even fewer with her first name. But I found one in Lexington who has a bunch of gold credit cards, a bank account in London, and an address in just the kind of fancy suburban neighborhood that Mom would choose, as far as I can tell from one of the mapping sites.”

“Do you have a phone number?” Mary asked.

“Yup.”

“Are you going to call her?”

“I… I’m not sure,” Sam said. “Before I do that I really ought to think about why she hasn’t been in contact with me even though she’s been so close for nearly four months.”

“Do you have any idea why your mother might have gone to Lexington?”

“Working her way through the admirals in the Kentucky Navy?” I suggested.

“Hush, Albert,” Mary said. “Be a father instead of a rejected lover.”

“He’s probably right, though,” Sam said. “For all Mom is smart and incredibly good at organizing things, she’s never made a life that didn’t have a man at the center of it.” Then she closed the subject of her mother for the evening by turning to me. “So, what’s this about a job, Daddy?”

I went through what I’d been told about Helene’s return to the family home. I stressed how upset it was making her father not to know where she went at nights.

“So was it Helene that Uncle Jerry wanted to talk to you about?” Sam said. “Not about being suspended from the IPD?”

“Suspended?”

“It was on the news tonight. The reporter who used to be married to whatshisname, the politician. She said she has sources who say Uncle Jerry has been suspended.”

“I was told it isn’t an official suspension.”

“It’s about the big reward for the bodies-in-the-trunks murderer, isn’t it?”

“They think he tried to get some of it, but he didn’t.”

“The reporter woman said there’s an internal police investigation.”

“That is all too true,” I said.

“So how does Helene fit into that?”

“Worrying about her keeps Jerry from giving his full attention to fighting the accusations.”

“She goes out every night?”

“It sounded that way.”

“What else do they know? Like, does she have more money than she ought to?”

“Or less?” Mary asked.

“Jerry didn’t say anything about her finances,” I said. “But they’re good questions.”

“It could take me quite a while to figure it all out,” Sam said. “Particularly if I’m not supposed to let her know that I’m investigating her.”

“You’re right. It could.”

“But,” Mary said, “you’ll be paid for your time. A good rate. Right, Albert? Plus expenses. Sam will have to go to clubs if Helene does, buy drinks, bribe people, take drugs, the whole nine yards.
