CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE
After a grueling day in the mountains and a non-stop session at the zoo backing up his claims with hard evidence, Erik drove home, ready to collapse. The hammering in his head had settled into an agonizing pressure behind his eyes. All emotion had been wrung from his body while his mind raced in a futile attempt to escape the inevitable truth.
He had conflicting feelings when he saw Nicole's car in the driveway. Part of him felt thankful for her being there, someone to comfort him and ease his pain. Another part felt ashamed, not wanting to face her.
He parked and rested his head on the steering wheel. He had to tell her the truth, but what would she think? He couldn't bear the thought of her abandoning him. He looked up and saw her in the doorway. Gritting his teeth against the pain crashing through his head, he climbed out of the car.
"Erik!â She said when she saw him. âYou look terrible. Are you all right?"
He winced at the shock on her face. She hugged him, and stroked his hair. Her tenderness made his throat feel tight. He felt like crying, but kept control.
"What happened up there?"
"Three murders," he mumbled. "Bloody. Senseless."
She took his briefcase, set it aside, and led him into the den where she took his shoes off and made him lie on the couch. It felt awkward having a woman fuss over him, but more than that, he felt undeserving. He pressed his palms into his eyes.
"Headache?"
He nodded. "Can't think straight right now. Head hurts."
She kissed him on the forehead. "Come on." She helped him up from the couch and took him to his bedroom where she undressed him and tucked him in. "Sleep," she whispered, crawling into bed beside him. "We'll talk later."
He wanted to say something, but felt emotionally numb. After kissing her on the cheek, he turned over and escaped into sleep.
His headache greeted him the next morning, but his stomach had settled. He felt weak and hunger gnawed at him. He turned and saw Nicole asleep beside him, fully clothed. Couldn't ask for a prettier guardian angel, he thought.
She opened her eyes, smiled, and kissed him lightly. "Feeling better?"
He sat up with his back against the headboard and rubbed his eyes. The movement made his head throb. "A little.â He glanced at the clock on the night stand. "Shouldn't you be at your office?"
She propped her head up on her hand. "You had me worried sick. I wasn't about to leave you." She sat up and put her arms around her knees. "You've had a bad time and you need someone. I'm here."
He rubbed his head, then reached over and took her into his arms. "Thanks, babe."
She squeezed him. âGo jump in the shower. It'll make you feel better. I'll fix something to eat, then we'll talk."
The events of the last couple of days rushed into his mind as if some hidden floodgate had opened. His guilt rode the crest of the wave.
