“Mark?” Violet had hardly dared to believe her caller ID when her phone had rung a moment earlier. “It's about bloody time. I called you almost a week ago.”

On the other side of the line, Mark chuckled. “Sorry, rookie. I had some things to do.”

Violet grumbled a few unintelligible words then sighed. “Has it gone well?”

Mark sighed too. “Depends on what you classify as 'well'.”

“Seriously, Mark?”

“I found what I was looking for, but I wish I hadn't.”

Violet shook her head, even though she knew he couldn't see her. “Great. While you've been off doing that, I have been dealing with celebrities choking to death on exotic bugs, fancy cars exploding and more dead ends than an impossible maze.”

Mark chuckled. “Sounds like I picked the right person for the job, then.”

Violet stared at her cell. “Was that meant to be a joke?”

“No. You said you've been dealing with it all and as the higher ups haven't contacted me, you must be doing a good enough job. Well done, rookie.”

Silence filled the line as Violet's voice abandoned her.

“I have two questions.”

“Er, okay, shoot.” Violet's eyebrows mashed together at the sudden change in tone.

“The first is for Dhillan. Can you ask him to send through the evidence files for the black fabric and sleep drug to this email?”

“Sure,” Violet said, scribbling out an email for Dhillan. She recognized the name and realized that it was the email for Mark's old partner back in Nashville, the one who had helped him close the Castell case. What on earth was Mark up to?

“Did you get it?”

“Yeah, I got it. What was your next question?” Violet asked as the silence stretched on. “You said you had two?”

Over the line Mark blew out a breath and she could almost see him running a hand through his thinning hair. Just when she thought he wasn't going to say any more, his voice crackled over the line.

“The Freezer cases. Have you linked any more?”

“No. I haven't had the time nor the energy with all these other cases going on.”

“Right. Of course not. Well, when you get back to it, do me a favor, okay?”

“Uh, sure. What is it?”

“Divide our unsolved murders into three categories. Ones with the fear link is obviously one group, but I want the ones without separated into two groups. One group where statements don't add up to a fear link and one group where the link is considered unknown because there are no statements from relatives or friends. Got it?”

Violet felt her breathing stall in her chest as he spoke. “I got it. Did you find something in Nashville about—”

“I don't want to say anything yet, rookie. Just do as I've asked, okay? And if you're not sure with all the psycho babble, ask Alma to help you out. In fact, get her to look over all the ones you think don't fit, just in case.”

“Yeah, all right. When will you be back?”

“I don't know. But probably sooner than I expected.”

“Okay. Stay safe, Mark.”

“You too, rookie.
