Chapter 11

“Mac, listen, something’s going on here. I’m hitting a brick wall. Chief’s on my ass. I told him I got a real bad vibe from the guy but he’s not listening. The guy’s alibi was flimsy, too. Seems he and three of his buddies were playing pool and drinking beer at one of the buddy’s houses out in Newport News. Even gave us consent to search the house. We came up empty handed but I still get a bad feeling about the guy.

I don’t know what the fuck is going on down here but I was told that they’ve been ruled out as suspects. Chief said we’ve got nothing on em, made me cut em loose. This guy’s dad is some tech-industry tycoon, owns a big corporation. Zander Industries. I got into it with my chief and he...Mac, the Chief pulled me from her case. Says I’m too close to you, that my judgment is, what did he say? Oh yeah, he said my ‘judgment is askew.’ Fucking ‘askew.’ I owe you this, Mac. I’ll give ya their names but you gotta promise me if you find out anything, you’ll tell me and not take it into your own hands.”

Mac swallowed and did something he had never done before. He lied to his friend. “Of course, Marcus. If I find out anything, I’ll come straight to you.”

The phone was quiet so long he almost thought Marcus had hung up. Just as Mac was about to ask if he was still there, Marcus went on talking, “Mac, you know I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you. I owe you this at least. The ex’s name is Michael Zander. His father is Thomas Hudson Zander, the CEO of Zander Industries. I’m texting you a list with the names of the three friends who are his alibi. Don’t do anything stupid, Mac, ok? Just remember what you used to tell me when we were headed into a mission. Cover your six.” Mac promised he would not do anything stupid and hung up.

Mac stopped and closed his eyes. His hands had stopped their jerky trembling. His jaw was set in a rigid line, and his fists were clenched by his sides. He opened his eyes and they blazed with a burning intensity. Gone was the slumped, defeated look he had worn the last week as he walked around the hospital. His daughter was lying in the ICU in a coma. If this boy, Michael, had hurt Anna, he was not going to just hurt him back. Mac was going to make sure he wasn’t able to do anything like this ever again.

He walked briskly back to the hospital entrance and headed inside. He moved through the lobby, avoiding the other people as much as possible. When Mac reached the elevators, he saw a large group of people waiting near the three sets of metal doors. The thought of having to deal with people felt something like dread for Mac, so he turned and opened the door to the stairwell.
