Chapter 20

Faith

My eyes stung like hell, but I wasn’t going to blink and miss something. I had to keep track of every turn and stoplight this van takes. I looked over at Emily, and I could tell she was doing the same thing.

“Where are you fucking taking us, you piece of shit!” she said, her mouth running like a sailor.

The driver was driving more erratically, and I could tell the kidnappers were getting irritated by her. A part of me wanted to tell Emily to stop antagonizing them, but the look in her eyes told me she knew exactly what she was doing.

“Not gonna answer me, you stupid assholes? What? Can’t think that far ahead?” she asked.

“Will you shut that stupid bitch up?!” the driver yelled.

“The boss said we can’t hurt her!” the guy near Emily said, and she just laughed hysterically at that response.

“You son of a bitch! Is hurting me the only way you know how to keep me quiet?!” she shrieked, provoking him.

I winced. I didn’t think it was smart to clue them in on how to keep her quiet that wouldn’t cause any injury. But just in case, I was going to shut my mouth and keep it to myself.

The two guys in the back with us just glared at her but didn’t make a move.

I scooted over to Emily a little bit but the bearded guy in front of me raised his pistol and pointed it at me, daring me to make another move.

“Don’t even try any funny movements, girl. Unlike your noisy friend over here, you’re expendable,” he said threateningly.

“Wow. Expendable. Big word!” Emily hollered.

“Shut up!” the bearded man said furiously.

“What do you want with us?” I asked, unable to hold my tongue any longer. “We don’t even know you guys!”

“You’ve been giving us a lot of trouble, woman!” the bearded man spat, prompting the others to glare at me. “It’s been hell trying to follow you these past few weeks, and if not for the boss good luck in spotting you, we would’ve—,”

“Don’t tell her anything, you idiot!” the other guy screamed. “You’re going to blow our cover!”

“You guys are obviously idiots,” Emily said, rolling her eyes with a scoff.

The man bared his teeth and raised his hand like he was going to hit her, and that was when I saw the insignia tattooed on the back of his hand. My brows furrowed as I recognized the symbol as the same one from the man I was talking to back at the art gallery.

But there was still something itching on the back of my mind while I focused on the insignia like I was forgetting something important… Damn it, what was it? Have I… have I seen that insignia somewhere before? Before I even talked to that man?

As if lightning struck me that moment, I realized I had seen it before, in the faded memory crystallizing like the drops of rain that hit the window as I stared through it that stormy night. The night that changed my life forever.
