Chapter Sixteen

It was dark, cold, raining, and they had a long day of walking already, so they decided to drive to the neighborhood pub Brody and Blair told them about. It was called The Long Ostrich.

“I love the way they name pubs here,” Joan commented.

“The names are interesting for sure. I wonder how they come up with some of them.”

“I think they scroll through a list of adjectives and one of nouns until they find a combination that tickles their fancy. And one that will be easy to decorate around. I don’t think they are trying to make a social or political statement with the name or summarize their heritage or menu.”

They walked into the pub and noticed three things. It was doing a bustling business, it was indeed decorated with an ostrich theme, and they ran into someone they knew. Some ones, actually. Sitting at a large round table for six were Evie, Savannah, and Astrid. They walked over to say hello.

“Fancy meeting you here,” Joan said as she approached.

“Joan, Alen. What a pleasure. Join us. We’re taking a break and having a spot of tea.”

“We missed lunch and are starving. Blair and Brody told us the food is good here, so we came to give it a try.”

“The food is good. Really, sit with us. I would love to hear what you’ve been up to. Astrid and I just finished work for the day and will be working on holiday decorating tonight. You should try the deep-fried Mars bar if you haven’t already.”

“There is no end to decadent dessert here, I’ve found. I had no idea. I thought France, Italy, for desserts. I feel like I’ve eaten more sugar in the last few days than in the last few months.”

“It is the season, dear girl. Just go with it. You can worry about it in the new year,” Astrid said.

The waiter came to take their order. Joan ordered a steak pie, and Alen ordered a hamburger.

“Have you tried haggis yet?” Savannah asked.

“Yes, we have, and we were surprised that we liked it very much,” Joan answered.

“So, tell us what have you been up to? Have you been exploring yet?”

“Yesterday we did a walking tour of Edinburgh, and today we did the Harry Potter tour. I got some fun photos. I’m trying to decide what I’ll do with all these photos. Tomorrow we do the Secrets of the Royal Mile tour, and Thursday night we do the Ghost bus tour. I’m really excited about that one.”

“At this rate we’ll likely run out of things to see long before our time is up,” Alen said wearily.

“Naw, Edinburgh is a treasure. With many sites and stories. We’ve a long history, ye know,” Evie said.

“You three are like the Three Musketeers. You are always together. Astrid, do you live with Ian and Evie?”

“No, I have my own apartment. We had a big family house, but after the boys moved away and my Henry died, it was too big, too empty, and too much work.
