Jordan heaved the last suitcase into the trunk of the taxi with a grunt, then slouched back to where Clarissa was waiting on the sidewalk.

“I’m not going to change your mind, am I?” he asked, shoving his hands deep inside his pockets.

She pursed her lips and shook her head. “This opportunity is just too good to pass by, you know that Jordan.”

Jordan nodded, then stared at the horizon, a far-away look in his eyes. “I know, Clarissa,” he said softly, then turned to face her. “I love you, Clarissa,” he said, his eyes lowered to the ground. “Please wait for me.”

Clarissa smiled and folded his upturned golf shirt collar into position. “You know what our deal was,” she said with a soft smile. “It’s only one year, then you’ll graduate and we’ll see each other again.” She cupped his chin with her hand. “You said you understand.”

Jordan snorted and pushed her hand away, then glared at her, a bitter smile plastered on his face. “See each other,” he spat.

Clarissa cupped his chin again, “You were never supposed to develop..., feelings for me.” She lifted his chin and locked her eyes on his. “That was the deal.”

Jordan nodded and smiled sadly. “I guess, but...,”

She placed a finger on his lips. “Hush now, you knew about my addiction. We had a deal.” She rubbed his cheek with her thumb. “It would hurt us both if I pretended to be something I never could be.”

Jordan slapped his leg with the palm of his hand. “At least you could fuckin’ try, Clarissa.” He swallowed hard and glared at her for a moment, a pleading look on his face. “Why can’t you just try?” he sobbed.

The taxi driver honked his horn and shouted. “The meter’s running here, you know?”

She shook her head. She hated drawn-out good byes. “I have...,”

Jordan nodded, then pursed his lips and gave her a peck on the cheek. “I’m going to miss you, Lissa.” He brushed past her and flung open the door to his condominium then slammed it behind him, not looking back.

As Clarissa slid into the back seat, she noticed his curtain part an inch.

She waved as the taxi pulled into the traffic and sped her to her bright new future at the New York Daily Tribune.
