âYou probably think Iâm just being childish, ignoring him and latching onto you.â
Zander held the passenger door of a huge SUV open. He hadnât even rolled up the garage door, which comforted her. She figured, as a protection specialist, he knew what he was doing.
âWhy are you trusting me?â
Kaylee raised her eyebrows in surprise. He really didnât know. âYou live with them. They respect you.â Kaylee shrugged. âThatâs good enough for me. Especially considering we wonât be gone more than half an hour.â
Zander tipped his head to the side. She figured that meant, âfair enough,â and then she asked, âHow much do you charge for this kind of thing anyway?â
That got her a reaction. As she hauled herself onto the front seat, Zander said, âFive hundred an hour.â
He shut the door on her coughing and sputtering. When he got in the driverâs side, she said, âFive hundred?â
âSaving lives doesnât come cheap.â
âWow.â
âMy insurance rates are a nightmare.â
Kaylee just blinked. âWell, thank you.â
âYouâre welcome.â
âAre you going to send me an invoice later?â
He hit the button on the visor for the garage door and started the engine. âNot to you.â
She twisted to stare him down, her fingers freezing on the seatbelt buckle. âWho is paying for my protection?â
âStuart.â He shot her a look like she shouldâve figured that out.
âGreat.â She straightened. He pulled out of the garage. âNow I feel even more like a jerk.â
âYou stood your ground, and it made you feel like a jerk?â
She shrugged one shoulder.
âHuh.â
Kaylee watched the roadside as he drove. Even though she was probably completely justified being mad at Stuart, she couldnât help feeling sympathetic. Heâd gone through something insane. It had nearly broken him.
Of anyone, she knew what that felt like.
One night, after a movie, her parents had been shot by a man who had left her alive. To this day, she didnât know why. She never would, considering he was dead now. Brad had killed him. If heâd found the reason sheâd been left alive, he hadnât told her what it was.
She pulled out the cold case file, trying to settle her thoughts with facts that encompassed zero emotion. After reading for a minute, she glanced at him. âI just donât like this whole Trina thing. I mean sheâs gone off the deep end, and for what? A shot at the flash drive? Thereâs no way Iâm going to give it to her, and now the cops are looking for her. Where is she going to hide?â
âIf she has half a brain, sheâs in Mexico by now.â
Was Trina that smart? Kaylee had the feeling her âfriendâ was a completely different person than sheâd previously thought. And now she was faced with the reality that maybe she didnât know one single true thing about her, even though theyâd known each other ever since Kaylee first started working at the bank.
âMaybe itâs her dad,â Kaylee said. âHopefully Basuto questions him and figures it out. Because if he did something to her, thatâs important to know.â
âYou think all evil is a result of people who have those actions forced on them.
