Aiden had two problems. First, Bridgetâs collapse into his arms and making sure she was okay, and second, the woman on the couch. He trained his gaze on her. âWhat did you do to her?â
âMe?â Yeah, she pretended to be totally innocent. He knew better.
Bridget stirred, her breath coming hard. âShe didnâtâ¦â
He waited for her to say more, but she had trailed off. Aiden helped her up since they were essentially on the floor with his leg bent at a weird angle. He didnât let go of Bridgetâs elbows. âWhat happened?â
âShe has issues with blood.â
He shot a look at the woman on the couch. âIâll deal with you in a minute.â
âHold upââ That was the big man present.
Sasha huffed. She muttered something under her breath that sounded like, âYou can try.â Only, at that moment, Bridget turned in his arms and he found himself looking into her eyes, those long lashes blinking. âShe didnât do anything.â
âI assume youâre referring to this moment?â
Bridget wasnât part of this, was she? Was this some kind of conspiracy? He shoved the thoughts away to revisit them later. He was going to ask all the questions and demand the woman on the couch explain herself. But for now, Bridget needed him. âAre you okay?â
âI need a minute.â She stepped away from him and moved on unsteady legs toward the hall and the bathroom or bedrooms beyond. Aiden stood up to go after her but stopped as she held out a hand to the man standing by the breakfast bar. His arms, once crossed over his huge chest, reached out to steady her by clasping her forearm with his. Aiden had seen him in town before, so he was obviously a local.
The man held her steady for a second longer as she passed. âOkay?â
She nodded, not stopping. Butch padded after her. He sniffed at the knee of the other manâs cargo pants. âSit.â
The dog carried on down the hall, following Bridget.
âHuh.â The man said, âSasha, you know this guy?â
The woman on the couch turned and looked at the window. âIt was going to come out, eventually.â
The man turned to him next. âDonaldson, right?â
âAiden.â He nodded as the man strode to him.
âZander.â They shook.
âRight.â Aiden had seen his photo at Tedâs house. âExplains a lot. But not everything.â
âWhatâs going on?â
Aiden turned to the woman. âYour name is Sasha?â
She glanced at him. Unremorseful. Determined not to break.
âFunny. Thatâs not what you told me when you came to see me six years ago.â He took a breath, hardly able to process the truth. âYou told me you worked for child services.â
Aiden couldnât believe it. He wanted it to come out, but not like this. Not when Sydney was on the couch across the alley, watching her favorite show. Heâd been out looking for the dog so she wouldnât worry about Butch. Keeping Butch in the backyard was proving to be a full-time job by itself. Had the dog been trying to get to Bridget the whole time? Once out, heâd come straight here.
