Chet grabbed me by my arms and pulled me into his chest and under the winding metal stairs for protection from the worst of it.

It didn’t help.

Water poured out of the ceiling like someone put in a waterfall and the water rushed through the living room, filling it faster than physically possible. It hit my ankles, was suddenly up to my knees, and then my waist. I pushed away from Chet, swimming backwards to the kitchen.

And hit a wall.

I turned, resting my hand on the air like a mime in an invisible box.

“Oh hell no!” I screamed, bringing my hands up and slogged a few feet. “Get behind me, boys, it’s about to get hot in here.”

My heart raced and I used the fear to fuel the fire as I shot it out of my palms, hitting the water with as much heat as I could muster without passing out. The water steamed and hissed where the flames hit it and I gritted my teeth, pouring more of myself into it, making the water sizzle and steam.

“Evie!” Chet grabbed me from behind, forcing my hands down. “Stop it!”

“We’re going to drown!” I fought against his arms, thrashing and bucking. “Stop the water.”

Chet whirled me around and pulled me into him, kissing me so fast my arms were still up against his chest.

The kiss went from hard and panicked to soft as I sunk into it and Chet pulled back too soon, looking me in the eyes when mine slid open.

“Okay, good, that worked,” Chet said, grinning. “Evie, there’s no water.”

“What?” I turned, looking around the living room. The couch, chairs, TV, assorted toys and books on their shelves were all perfectly dry, but a little singed. “Ugh. There was water. If the ceiling didn’t collapse, why did you grab me and pull me under the stairs?”

His eyes widened. “I didn’t.”

O’Shay peaked his head over the side of the couch. “Is she done?”

“I think so,” I said. “None of that happened? I imagined it?”

“All we saw was you scream, run, and start shooting fire at the living room. O’Shay put it out and was trying to talk to you, to get through to you.”

I took a deep breath and smiled thin and tight at O’Shay. “Thanks for not assuming I was attacking you and attacking back.”

“Based on what you’ve told me, I could tell you were seeing something and panicking, and figured this thing would think it funny to turn us against each other. Especially with your dislike of the Council.”

I looked down, biting my lip. “Mr. O’Shay, you just proved by not assuming I was attacking you that you’re not all douchebags looking for any excuse to throw witches in Oz. Some of you might have a brain. Thank you.”

He drew his eyebrows together, making his forehead wrinkle up. “You’re welcome, and I think there was a compliment to me buried somewhere in there.”

I nodded. “Somewhere. You’ll have to dig for it.” He smiled at that. “Okay, so this thing can make us full on hallucinate.
