It was well past two o’clock when Hades came strolling across the sand, waving his hands around in animated gestures as he laughed. That wasn’t the part that had Miles growling, though. It was the young man that walked beside him, jabbering away and laughing along with his mate.

Watching them together, they looked like longtime friends. Miles could only assume this stranger was the reason Hades had missed their lunch date, and he didn’t know how felt about the two spending the entire morning together. When his mate had insisted that he lounge on the beach instead of exploring the island with him, Miles had thought little of it, assuming Hades needed some time to himself.

Now, however, alarm bells were sounding, and Miles was suddenly remembering the seemingly innocent conversation in a whole new light. Even more suspicious was Hades’ abrupt change in mood the minute he spotted Miles walking toward him.

His eyes widened for just a moment before his demeanor became more businesslike, and he ushered his new friend away before Miles could reach them. “Sorry I’m late,” he said by way of greeting, pushing up on his toes to kiss Miles’s lips. “Have you already eaten?”

“Who was that?” He tried to sound casual, as though the answer was unimportant, but it was damn hard when his hellhound wanted to rip the guy’s arms off and beat him with them.

“Oh, just some native,” Hades answered with a dismissive shrug. “He’s kind of like a tour guide.”

The answer sounded fishy as hell, but Miles didn’t want to fight. Despite how it spiked his blood pressure each time another man propositioned his lover, he trusted Hades without reservation. Things had been a little rocky between them as of late, but he didn’t think they were bad enough that the guy would go searching for someone else to fulfill his needs.

“Maybe he can show us both around tomorrow.”

“No.” Hades’ eyes narrowed at the corners, and he shook his head quickly. “I mean, I learned a lot today,” he hurried to add. I could show you the forest. We could make a day of it.”

Their conversation was going south in a hurry. Every question he asked was met with a vague nonanswer or careful deflection. He really wanted to let it go and move on to more pleasant topics, but he’d moved past suspicion and into concern.

“Is there something you want to tell me?”

Miles was finished beating around the bush, and he wanted answers. Mostly, he wanted Hades to tell him he was being an idiot and relieve his fears. While possessiveness was engrained in his personality and he’d never tried to keep it a secret, there was another part of him that was terrified of losing the man he loved.

“What do you mean?” Fidgeting nervously, Hades glanced away, darting his gaze around the beach and refusing to look at Miles.
