Chapter Fourteen

The next morning, Logan made sure they got an early start. While he didn’t have a dream the night before, he could still feel Kenny’s presence riding him like an invisible weight on his back. For some reason, Kenny wanted the package delivered sooner rather than later, and Logan was starting to feel the pressure.

Dawson didn’t complain, just got ready as quickly as he could, then climbed into the passenger seat of the Camaro and promptly closed his eyes. Their lovemaking last night must have worn him out. Logan smiled, happy to know he was the cause.

“Did you want me to stop for breakfast anywhere?” he asked as he pulled out of the hotel parking lot.

“Just a drive-thru where I can get some coffee, unless you want to eat. I’m good until lunch.” Dawson peered at him. “You seem bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this morning.”

“I had one of my best night’s sleep in a long time. No dreams. Nothing. Solid eight hours. I’ve forgotten what that feels like.”

Dawson patted Logan’s leg. “I’m glad. You needed that.”

He shot Dawson a quick smile. “Thanks.”

After going through a drive-thru to grab coffee for both of them, he got back on the interstate and headed towards Oklahoma. It was time to finish this last part of their journey.

Nine hours later, Logan slowed the car as they entered the outskirts of the small town of Longtree, Oklahoma. Dawson straightened in his seat, then pointed out the brick building that had the city hall sign on it.

“We could probably start there.”

Lawson shrugged. “They might be closed already.”

“True, but we should check first. If they are, we’ll head to the diner and see what we find there.”

He was right, so Logan did as Dawson had suggested. He pulled into a parking space, then shut off the Camaro. As they were walking up to the front door, a middle-aged lady came out. They watched as she turned to lock the door.

“Wait, ma’am,” Dawson called to her.

She whirled around. Her slightly fearful expression caused Logan to stop at the bottom of the steps. He pulled Dawson to a halt beside him.

“We’re looking for someone and wondered if you might know where we could find him,” he explained.

“Who are you looking for?” She narrowed her eyes to study them.

Logan opened the file folder he was carrying to pull out the picture of Kenny and Harold. “We know one of the men in this photograph is Kenny Gibson. He and his family used to live on a farm around here.”

Pursing her lips, the woman seemed to be thinking, then she nodded. “Right. Benjamin Gibson died near to six years ago. His oldest brother, Bert, came back to Longtree, sold the family farm, then went back to North Carolina.”

“Yes, ma’am. We don’t really have any idea where the farm is located, and we’d like to know that, but we were wondering if you might know who the other man in the picture with Kenny is. His name is Harold, but we don’t know his last name.
