Chapter Twenty-Two
Float like a butterfly; sting like a bee.
~ Moscow Rules
Monday morning
Prescott rested his hands on the top of the steering wheel while Raine clambered into his black SUV outside her high rise. The more time they spent together, the better chance the stiffness would shake out of their relationship.
âWhen we get down to Bragg, Iâd like you to wait for me to open your doors for you, please. Hold your chair. Iâd like the opportunity to do the gentlemanly niceties.â
âYouâre right,â she said. âWe should start practicing that now.â
Raine was dressed in a pair of form fitting jeans and a chunky turtleneck sweater. No makeup. Her hair was wound smoothly into a military-style bun. After she pulled her lap belt into place, he started through the parking lot.
âWhoâs going to be there this morning?â Raine asked, rubbing Chapstick on her lips and stowing it back in her bag.
âFrom my team, Kennedy and Griffin. Theyâre our experts on asymmetrical warfare out of post USSR countries.â
âLisaâs a mad wizard with cyber.â She pulled her eyeglass case from the bag and popped the lid. âI like Rowan Kennedy. I met him recently when we ran an op together.â
âI heard.â
âBy the watercooler?â She dropped her bag to the floor.
âNo, in a debrief.â
âWhat was your take away?â
âI formed an impression of Clara Edwards not Raine Meyers. But I thought she was fierce as hell. That Iâd like to run an op with her, but Iâd be conscientious to protect my zipper.â Prescott pulled to a stop at the top of the lot and waited for an opening in traffic.
Heâd wanted this conversation. He wanted to know her thinking. When Prescott had read the report, heâd had the impression that the FBI was somehow behind the curve, and Clara Edwards had a lot more nuanced information about the event. Sheâd worked Kennedy like a Claymation figure to fit into the scene she constructed.
âWe were briefed on how tactically skilled you were in emasculating the mark by describing his pathetic penis,â he said. âAnd then you stabbed the other guy in the dick.â Prescott pulled out and started down the road.
âIf you only have one good thrust, itâs important to make it count.â
âHard to imagine a guy being able to chase after you with a severed member.â
âMy thinking exactly.â Raine turned her head toward the oncoming cars. âA girlâs got to do what a girlâs got to do,â she said under her breath.
âIâm not disputing that. Just letting you know, you keep targeting a manâs penis, and youâll get a reputation.â He slid to the left to get around the semi belching blue smoke.
âOh come on. Iâve only ever applied dick abuse on missions. And only when it serves the greater good.â
Prescott turned her way, and she batted her lashes. âIn my personal life, Iâm very fond of penises.â
He looked out the driverâs side window when a grin spread across his face. Yeah, I remember.
Prescott wished he could rearrange his hard on into a more comfortable position.
