Chapter Ten

Shade pulled his wrinkled jeans from his backpack and tugged them on, not bothering to zip or button them. Some great protector he’d turned out to be. One mate had passed out in fear, and the other had actually gotten shot. Tess had been right. His men certainly deserved better than him.

Pushing the depressing thought away, he dug through the bag again, pulling out his cell phone and dialing quickly.

“You made it,” Tess answered without preamble.

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I need some answers first. Why are you after Fletcher?”

“He needs to be protected.”

Shade growled. “He almost got fucking shot! How is that protecting him? I’m done with this shit. I want out, and I want you to stay the hell away from my mates!”

“I’ll help you as best I can, but you’re going to have to hand over Fletcher. I promise he won’t be harmed.”

“No,” Shade answered flatly. No way was he going to sacrifice his mate so that he could be free of The Allegiance. “You’re supposed to be his friend. Why are you doing this to him?”

“I am his friend.” Tess sighed wearily. “I’ve been protecting him since he was just a baby. He has to be kept safe.”

“Then why were there men trying to break into my house with semi-automatic weapons? That doesn’t sound very safe to me, Commander.”

“Tell me where you are. This isn’t something we should discuss over the phone.”

“How do I know I can trust you?” Shade paced the small living room, running a hand through his short hair. He’d known Tess for centuries, had fought beside her and watched her back. Right now, though, she was allied with the enemy.

“I would never do anything to put Fletcher in danger.”

If Tess had told him that he could trust her, that she wouldn’t betray his whereabouts to The Allegiance, or pulled rank on him, Shade would have hung up on her. Her genuine caring and concern for Fletcher’s wellbeing was his undoing, though. “Alaska.”

“Give me your location, and then turn your phone off and remove the battery. I have to tie up some loose ends here and make sure I’m not followed. I’ll be there within the week.”

Shade understood by her tone that one of those loose ends included finding someone to take on his assignment. His informant would have been arriving that night to brief him and provide him with the target’s scent to imprint. He wouldn’t apologize, but he did have something to say. “I’m not taking another assignment. I’m out, Tess. I’ll take my mates and go into hiding if I have to, but I won’t do this anymore.”

“Just don’t say anything right now,” Tess warned. “I might have a way to help you, but it’s going to take some fancy talking on my part. Give me a week…”—she paused for just a moment—“maybe two. Don’t leave, and definitely don’t go out in the open. I’ll be there when I can.” Then she hung up, leaving Shade standing in the middle of the living room frowning.
