‘You did – you invented this piece of theatre,’ Magnus said, going at it again. Aunt Charlotte was giving them time alone. She was sitting in the kitchen with a tea-cosy over the teapot. ‘The Guards are on to you.’

‘You’re lying about the Guards. I had a long talk with the detective, I’ll have you know.’

‘Richie. Yes. You liked him, did you?’

‘He knows what’s what. You needn’t worry.’

‘I can go to Richie and make a case. You were under stress. I can settle this. There’ll be no serious consequences.’

‘The case is made – no thanks to you.’

‘I can be very convincing. I know how men like Richie work.’

‘I’m making plans. I have a new life ahead of me.’

‘Fair enough.’

‘I’ll not be stopped.’

‘That’s the spirit. Let’s clear the decks.’

‘Your father is for the asylum.’

‘I’ll get you the best therapist. We’ll write it up. We’ll show it to Richie, and he’ll let it all go.’

‘Mr Richie says I’m under protection.’

‘Does he? That’s nice. It just goes to show how much he likes you. We get you written up, and he’ll see you right.’

‘Listen to yourself. You’ve turned bitter. What’s happened to you?’

‘I’m here to fix this situation. I’ll fix it, then you can have your new life. The old man, too.’

‘But you want the plain truth?’

‘Yes. I do.’ Magnus noticed for the first time that his mother had made a bad job of her makeup. There was too much of it.

‘Your father tried to poison me. There. You have it.’ She appeared to be imagining the paraquat rapidly spreading through her, her body cells shutting down by the millions.‘I’m so terrible alone, Magnus,’ she said.

‘You have Charlotte looking after you.’

‘She doesn’t believe he did it. I know she doesn’t, though she won’t say.’

‘I don’t believe it.’

‘You’re only saying that. This could kill me yet, Magnus.’

‘Just tell me what you did,’ he said, ‘and you’ll be fine.’
