Chapter 11
âWhere is he?â
âJust to the left of the piano.â
Bethany had a quick glance at him and looked away. He was staring intently at her with both feet firmly on the ground and his hands in his pockets. âHe doesnât look happy, and heâs the only person not speaking to anyone. I hope he doesnât come over and say anything to me. Iâd have to leave.â
âMaybe we should go now. If the family had a huge fight the night of Ianâs murder, weâre only going to add fuel to an already volatile situation. Even though we donât know what the situation is.â
âYouâre right. Weâve paid our respects so I think we should go. I donât know that the rest of them will be as welcoming as Cheryl.â
âIâll just have another one of those pastries. Theyâre delicious.â
Before Ettie reached the buffet table, a man stood in front of them. âHello again.â
âWho are you?â Ettie asked before she remembered her manners.
âIâm Ianâs son, Greg. Iâve met Ms. Parker before.â
âYes, and please, you can call me Bethany. Ettie, this is Greg. He came into my store a few days agoâremember I told you about him?â
âOh, yes. Iâm Ettie Smith. Nice to meet you and Iâm sorry for your loss.â Ettie knew that this man was most likely Bethanyâs cousin.
âThank you. It was good of you both to come such a long distance.â He frowned at both of them and scratched the side of his face. âThe detective still doesnât know why he was there in your store, Bethany, and neither does anyone else.â
âI donât know either,â Bethany said with half a shrug of her shoulders.
âItâs quite a mystery,â Ettie added.
âAnyway, Iâm glad you found your way to the house here. I didnât see either of you at the funeral.â
âYour⦠now let me see. She wouldâve been your auntâshe invited us.â
âMy aunt?â He looked amused. âWell, Iâm glad you came anyway. If youâll excuse me, I have to make the rounds and speak to everyone.â He looked intently at Bethany. âHave you still got my card?â
âYes, I do, and I will call if I find anything out.â
âThank you.â
âWe were just leaving anyway, werenât we, Ettie?â
âThatâs right. We were.â
âAre you going back to Lancaster tonight?â
âWeâre staying here in town and then leaving tomorrow,â Bethany said.
âI hope you enjoy your stay, even though itâs a short one. Thank you for being here. I do appreciate the effort it must have taken to come here.â He nodded goodbye to the both of them before he walked away.
âThere are two people in the family speaking to us.â Ettie looked around to see if the angry young man was still looking at them. He was no longer standing in the spot where heâd been.
âI still donât know if he knows who I am. I nearly said something, but itâs not the place.â
âNee, itâs not. We should say goodbye to Cheryl before we go.â
They looked around the room and couldnât see her.
âShe might be back in the room where she was talking to us,â Bethany suggested.
