Chapter 17
Jake
Jake had left the office, not wanting to deal with Charles, who was still lurking around the station. He was about to call Jo and tell her he’d meet her for lunch when his phone rang.
“Hey, Chief Milner.” He had not yet been comfortable calling her that and would like it better if she were already gone. “What’s up?”
“They’ve found Bodin’s car. It was abandoned out on a dead-end path in Stevens County, right on the county line.”
“I’m on my way. I’ll call Harrison. He’s agreed to work with me.”
“Keep me posted. I don’t like this case changing jurisdictions. You do what you can to bring it back home.”
There was a loud click on the line, and he dialed Harrison’s number.
“Detective Thomas, I wondered when you would call me. I’ll text you the address. Milner sounded pissed that it was on my side of the line.”
“Yeah, she’s a strange one.” He heard the sound of the text coming through. “I’m on my way to the scene.”
“I’ll see you when you get here.” He ended the call, and Jake finished the drive out to the scene.
When he got there, the car was parked in the narrow path, and Harrison stood around it with his officers. He looked up when he saw Jake. “Looks like he drove it until he ran out of road. If you want to call one of your tows, we could have this carried back to your lot. I’m afraid ours won’t be secure enough.”
Jake wasn’t sure his would be either, but he had to play it cool. “I’ll have Milner get on it.” He took out his phone and texted the other woman. He waited for a response and then walked over to take a look inside. “I’ll get my forensics team on it too. I want to make sure things are done by the book in case we need to send this asshole up for life.”
“You don’t sound so convinced. Don’t think he’ll make it?”
“Not at the rate he’s going.”
All of a sudden, one of the other officers ran up to Harrison. “There’s been a shooting. That gunshot we heard through the woods. That was Bart Bush. His neighbor down the street found him in his yard. He’s called an ambulance, but he said the man’s lost a lot of blood. I’m headed over.” The man took off like a shot, and Harrison frowned.
“Fucker. If Bart dies, I want that piece of shit to pay.”
“If you have this, I’ll go to the other scene. We’re going to need forensics on that too.”
“Do what you need. This is so close to the line, it won’t matter anyway, but in the future, you remember this kindness.”
Jake nodded. Then he hurried to his car. He turned around and followed the officer to the scene, as a few others cleared out. It was just around the corner and up another street, but there was already an ambulance on the scene and a few of the man’s fellow firemen.
Jake jumped out of the car.
