What everyone didnât know, is that they had no plans of coming back.
Disappearance
It had only been about ten hours since Steve and Brian had left St. Davidâs. âThatâs not that long,â Patty said to Guy.
âSomething is out of place, Patty. I donât know whatâs wrong, but something is not adding up.â Guy was concerned. Beverly had come back right away, what was taking them so long?
Three more hours passed, and people started to ask where they were. Guy made excuses as to why they had not returned yet, saying that he had given them a difficult assignment and they were gathering valuable information. In the back of his mind, only two outcomes seemed plausible.
Outcome one: Steve and Brian did not end up in the same place.
Outcome two: Steve and Brian did not find Heaven.
When twenty-four hours had passed, Steve and Brian had still not returned. A worried group gathered at the stone benches and waited for Patty to start the meeting.
âI know you all are worried, and we are too,â Patty began. âIf Steve and Brian have disappeared, maybe this means we should stop the experiments. We have all found happiness here in St. Davidâs and whatâs on the other side of the portal may be dangerous.â
A quiet voice said in the back, âIf thereâs something more, if there is a heaven, we need to find out. We need to keep going.â It was Sandra. She stood and continued. âEveryone who has come back has said the experience on the other side was beautiful and happy. No one suggested there was anything dangerous. Maybe Steve and Brian liked it so much they decided to stay.â
âAnd leave us all here?!â Tom interrupted.
âWe donât know,â Sandra continued. âThat is why we have to keep trying, so we know.â
Guy stood tall and addressed the crowd. âIâd like to do one more experiment.â He turned to Patty. âIâd like to see if one person can choose to go to another personâs heaven.â
Patty glared at Guy with wide eyes.
âPatty,â Guy began, as he knelt down to his shaking wife, looking her in the eye with compassion and love. âMy love, you are the only one who can do this. If you can go through the portal and get to the same place as I was, it means people have a choice. It means they can agree on a heaven and be there together.â
Patty stood up. âI wonât do it!â she said and stormed off.
Guy stared after at Patty, who had quickly crossed the center of the cemetery and sat under the tree the two of them cuddled under each day. Please do this Patty, for me, Guy thought.
Patty crossed her arms and sat on the bench. Guy could see this did not sit well with her. He could see her perspective. She had to be wondering how she could go to a place that he thought was heaven. She had said that period in her life was constant worry, he knew it had been hell for her.
