The children gasped as the wizard shrank and a forest appeared. Whomticker, seeing their faces, realized how small he was and panicked. His tree house had become lost in the woods, the children giants. Magic from the vial had swallowed him. He trembled and hid behind a tree when the very fairies he had stolen the magic from appeared.

A female dressed in a golden gown the nighttime forest shimmered through her wings. She stopped mid-flight near to him and surveyed her surroundings. He ducked lower.

“He’s behind the tree.” Felicity pointed, but the fairy failed to hear her.

“We’re in a different realm,” Travis said. “Another plane of the universe. Maybe even a different time. Hush now and see what happens.”

“Maybe to when Whomticker stole the magic?” Jeremy asked.

“Maybe.”

“Hush,” Felicity whispered, putting her finger to her mouth. “He shouldn’t have stolen their magic. Now he’s in trouble and we get to watch.”

“What’s that light?” Jeremy asked.

A light appeared in a cluster of shadows; a candle shone in a cottage window and two children stood by the door.

“Father!” the little boy called.

“Come away from the door,” their mother said, her voice trailing as she ushered them inside. “Your father is gone. He may never return. Jean, it’s up to you now to be the man of the house. Come inside less you, too, are taken away to war, never to return to your sister and I.”

“That’s sad,” Felicity mumbled.

“Hush,” Jeremy told her as he cut Travis a worried frown.

The house grew dark as the light in the window dimmed. They could see the children still as their mother tucked them into their beds and as she snuffed out the candle.

“Look, there’s Whomticker behind that tree, still,” Jeremy said.

They were in complete darkness; the cottage, the forest, the children in Whomticker’s treehouse. A tiny sparkle caught Travis’s eye. The light multiplied like tiny stars at dusk. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of winged creatures appeared. Fairies floating about in a magic vapor much like the mist in Whomticker’s bottle. Leanna drew in her breath and Travis glanced at the girl when she took his hand and moved closer to him.

“They’re beautiful!” she said.

The cloud of fae folk moved as one body in and out of the vapor toward the cottage and, with a poof, it was inside the house, lighting the children’s room. Travis watched in awe, but when he heard a scream, his heart raced, and he held his sister’s hand tighter. A terrifying commotion shook the cottage.
