Marco asked: "But where were you?" "Here, behind the screen."

"And ... did you see us?"

"How could I see you? There was the screen."

Marco looked at the girl, uncertain. Then he said brusquely:

"Well, let's go, come on, let's go somewhere else. Mummy still has to get dressed."

He took her hand and she let herself be led gently out of the room and across the corridor to the studio. Marco shut the door and went to the picture he had slashed that morning. "Look," the girl cried, "someone has cut your painting."

Marco said drily: "I did." "But why?"

"Because I didn't like it."

"Why don't you do a portrait of me like you do of Mummy?" she demanded.

Marco answered: "I don't do portraits. This could be any woman's body."

The girl pointed at the painting: "But Mummy has a scar on her tummy, just like this woman. Don't you like doing Mummy's portrait any more? If you don't, why don't you do one of me?"

She was silent for a moment, then added: "I have a scar too." Marco was amazed: how could he have forgotten?

It had happened a year ago. He had been abroad and while he was away the girl had been operated for appendicitis. With an effort, he got out: "I know you have."

The girl said chattily: "When I had the operation I said to Mummy, now I have a scar like you. So, will you do my portrait?"
