The Chief of the Political Section was disappointed and tired. “No sooner had you left Galano,” he related to Rogas, “than he got on the phone. He called, in this order, the director-general of the West Bank; the president of Schiele Pharmaceuticals; the editor of the government paper Order and Freedom ; the editor of the opposition’s weekly, the Evening Red; that famous tailor, Gradivo; the actress Marion Delavigue; the Count of Santo Spirito; and the ex-Queen of Moldavia…. Merry Widow stuff, isn’t it? He informed all these people, with screams of laughter, that he had had a visit from a police inspector and it seemed the police suspected him of being the perpetrator of this systematic picking off of judges. Everyone was greatly amused. Now, do you believe people like that can be part of a revolutionary plot—what’s more, that they can approve of actions like killing judges?”

“What about you?” He thought, In another minute, he’ll be saddling me with responsibility for the idiotic idea of going after Galano.

“Not in my wildest dreams … All the same, from Galano’s telephone calls we’ve come up with one useful little detail. At one point, when he was talking with the actress, he said that, if anything, the police should be looking into the people in Zeta. Zeta’s the neo-anarchist group that’s headed up by that ex-priest; he’s a theorist in Christian evangelical anarchism. The group’s financed by Narco, who is practically sole owner of the big SD store chain. SD—you know—it stands for Square Deal. I must say, it strikes me as a little much that evangelical neo-anarchists would be devoting themselves to an open season on judges. But I will have to read the Bible, also all the publications these Zeta people put out.”

“As far as the Bible is concerned, I can tell you unqualifiedly that you will find a great many injunctions against judging others and against judges. There is nothing evangelical, of course, about resorting to violence—slugging it out, as we policemen say. However, one doesn’t know how priests and ex-priests read the Bible, when they read it. And then there’s ‘I came not to send peace, but the sword.’”

“Who says that?”

“Christ said it.”

“Right, there is some talk about a sword. Still, I would never have thought that Christ—”

“It could be a metaphor. The sword, I mean.”

“But a .38-caliber gun isn’t. And that ’s what we’re dealing with…. That’s why I don’t trust the clue Galano’s been kind enough to hand us.”

“Nor do I.”

“But we’ve got it, and we can’t not look into it…. I think you’re the person who should look into it…. Galano, while he was still talking to the actress, said, ‘This evening, everybody’s going to be at Narco’s. If only the police knew …’”

“In my opinion, Galano suspected that the telephone was tapped and wanted to play a joke on us.”

“You think so? … Well, joke or no joke, this evening you’ll go to the Narco home. The house, naturally, will be surrounded—but discreetly—by plainclothesmen who will arrive a few at a time.
