That evening Alvira watched her nephew-in-law depart the kitchen after supper, and she was certain he would head to the café to help his brother. Cole knew Peter wanted to be at home with his wife, so Cole would serve suppers to allow his eldest brother time at home with his family at night. It would also help take Cole’s mind off Wilhelmina.

Alvira continued to stare out the back door window, lost to her thoughts, jumping when a hand rested on her shoulder. “Oh!”

“Vera?” Tobias murmured, as he kissed the side of her neck. “I’d never mean to startle you, but you’ve seemed out of sorts for a few weeks.”

“It’s the end of April,” she whispered. “School will be out soon.”

“Yes.” He let out a deep breath, wrapping his arms around her waist. “I had hoped you’d want to spend more time with me.”

“You know I want to.” She tilted her head to the side, sighing with pleasure as he kissed his way down her neck.

“Do you? You’ve spent little time in the store lately.” He ran a hand up and down her arm, as though to take any sting of criticism from his words. “Vera?” he whispered, when she remained quiet.

“Will you be terribly disappointed when I don’t teach anymore?”

He eased her to face him, frowning at her. “Why wouldn’t you teach? The children love you, and the parents adore you.”

“Please don’t be angry with me.” She looked at the buttons of his checkered blue shirt, only meeting his gaze when he put a finger under her chin. “I didn’t think …”

“What’s the matter, Vera?” His gaze showed concern and a deep fear that he was unable to hide.

“I didn’t think it was possible.” Taking a deep breath, she blurted out, “I’m expecting our child. We’re to have a baby, Toby.”

He goggled at her, taking a step away to gape at her. “A baby?” He shook his head and sputtered sounds, but nothing intelligible emerged.

A tear tracked down her cheek. “A baby. I … I know we never discussed … never planned—”

What more she would have said was muffled against her husband’s chest as he grabbed her and held her close. “Vera, oh my precious Vera,” he whispered into her ear. “We’re to have a baby.” He eased her away, peppering kisses over her face and lips. Trembling, he stopped, pressing his forehead against hers. “I never dared dream we’d be so blessed.”

She nodded, unable to speak, as tears coursed down her cheeks.

“Why the tears, love?” He kissed at them, frowning, as they continued unabated. “Are you upset to have my child?”

“No!” she cried out, her hands tightening on him. “I’m overwhelmed. With gratitude and disbelief and every other emotion I can’t even name.” She swiped at her cheek. “I’m so emotional. I have no control over anything right now.”

“Ah, love, you’ll be the most beautiful mother. You and Jane, having babies near the same time.”

“Some will think it unseemly.”

“Who cares?” He cupped her cheeks and looked deeply into her eyes.
