The next morning Mom was so happy, she was even making breakfast. There were cans of corned beef hash that had been in the pantry for who knows how long. She was whipping it up, along with some pancakes. Dad had gone to the grocery store to buy some eggs. They were the cutest things together in the kitchen, just laughing and playing.
âCome on in, you guys,â she said to the three of us as we peered around the corner. We immediately took her up on the invitation.
âDad, you gotta come around more often. She donât ever throw down like this!â York remarked. âMa, you know Iâm keepinâ it real!â
âOh, boy, hush,â she said as she swatted her hand playfully at York.
âFor real, Dad, we missed you. Can you stay with us a couple of days?â York asked.
âNo, Son. I gotta get back to work.â
âMan,â Yancy said with disappointment. âI thought you could come out on the court with us and get some hoops in.â
âSee, I know yâall gonâ want some new kicks in a minute. Dad gotta keep workinâ.â
âRight, right,â York added. âYep, thatâs what Iâm talkinâ about.â
Mom was standing and watching us like she was holding a big secret. Her smile stretched from ear to ear as if she wanted to tell us some good news.
Yancy noticed it too. âWhat, Mom? Whatâs goinâ on?â he asked.
âJeffery, you tell them. This is your idea so you tell âem.â
âTell us,â York pressed.
Mom couldnât hold it in any longer. She spoke first. âWell, okay. Your dad and Iâve been talkinâ. We donât want him to have to keep on payinâ for two households. Plus, the market isnât as bad in Orlando, so I have a better chance of finding a job there. Then too I could be closer to my mom. You guys have been doing so good; your grades will make it easy to transfer in the middle of the semester andââ
As she kept talking, I started to realize that Mom was saying we were going to move right away. I wasnât even eating yet, but I felt completely choked up.
âNo, Mom!â I screamed out. âWe canât move right now. Itâs bad enough that youâre moving me away from my friends in a few months, but right now Iâm in track season. We canât leave now!â
She said calmly, âIâm pretty sure whatever school youâll be attending down there has a track team.â I was the one who was extremely excited.
âYeah, but Coach Hicks really needs me on the team! And heâs been in the Olympics before. The schools down there probably donât have a coach who can set me on a good path with track. He sees my potential and this is important to me. Mom, no! Please, no!â
Mom was stuck. She gave my father a look as if to say, Can you help me, please? But the look he gave her said, Youâre on your own.
âI donât think Iâm ready to go either,â Yancy spoke up. âI have all these honor classes and I know my teachers really well.
