“You still in one piece?” Freya asked as Nate cracked his eyelids.

The woman looked about as bad as he felt, though she’d managed to avoid injuries as terrible as his. Still, the burns that marred her body were as red and painful-looking as his own.

“Still kicking,” Nate rasped, not even trying to sit up. “How long has it been?”

“Only around fifteen minutes,” Freya replied, tucking a stray lock of hair behind an ear – it had come loose in the desperate battle.

“The carts?”

“Made it to the mine as far as I can tell, but we’d have to check.”

“Any monsters?”

“A couple,” Freya said. “But I managed to drive them off. Seems like a bad idea to hang around here though.”

“I agree,” Noam said, coming into view.

The man was limping, though of the three of them, he appeared to be the least injured.

“Yeah,” Nate groaned. “We should definitely leave. I don’t think I’ve got the strength to move though, let alone walk.”

“I don’t think any of us do,” Noam said, looking around. “But others will be attracted by the smell of blood.”

Nate grunted in reply, then turned – painfully – onto his side, revealing his calf.

“Oof!” Freya winced when she saw the messy state of his leg.

“Okay,” Noam admitted. “Maybe you can’t walk. I’ve managed to recover a bit. Let’s see what I can do for that.”

A hand clamped around his calf and Nate felt soothing warmth flow into it, washing away the worst of the pain as it removed the destroyed muscle and began restoring it to full. Unfortunately, that only lasted for around twenty seconds, as Noam was forced to cut it off after that.

“I haven’t felt an overload before,” Noam said, swiping at his forehead. “And I don’t think I want to ever again.”

“I can agree with that,” Freya said. “It felt like I’d been hit by a train, and I don’t mean one of those slow-moving ones.”

“It gets worse as you grow,” Nate groaned, forcing himself shakily to his feet.

His calf still protested the movement, as did his entire body, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as before. He could stand, and if he could do that, he could walk.

“Did you collect all the corpses?” he asked.

“I got some, Noam got the rest,” Freya said, taking his arm and steadying him.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t lean on her, as she had also sustained a leg injury. That was how these monsters hunted. Take out the legs so the prey falls, then go for the throat.

“Those little beasties were harder to kill than that Rattlegator,” Freya said with a wince as they began plodding towards the mine.

“They work well together,” Nate said, cycling his kanta, just as he felt Freya doing. “That’s what makes them so dangerous.”

“Hey, at least we got something out of it,” Freya said. “I mean, aside from horrible PTSD and lifelong nightmares.”

“Yes,” Noam agreed. “I jumped to rank thirty-five. Not bad for a single fight with a group of regular monsters.”

“Thirty-seven,” Nate said with a groan.

“Well, I
