Prime Minister Blair took over.

“We can’t tolerate these hurricanes. They will destroy everything within a hundred miles of the coasts. Even repairs will be impossible because of the constant winds. This will be as bad as nuclear war.”

“That figures” said Steve. “Just when everything is going fine we get a new problem.”

“What am I supposed to do,” I complained, “change the laws of physics? This is the most impossible problem yet.”

Blair said, “You have to return the Earth’s declination to the original.”

“I thought the Asians couldn’t get through the winter.”

“It will be hard on them.”

“How hard?”

“We may lose half a billion people.”

Steve protested, “You can’t be serious!”

“We politicians are necessary evils. The matter must be addressed politically, not sentimentally. In politics there are no men, only ideas, no feelings, only goals. Order must be preserved or we are all lost.”

My heart raced. I could not kill half a billion people! I looked at Steve miserably and shook my head.

He told Blair, “Let us think it over a few days.”

Blair and the meteorologist got up without a word. Conversation was useless. They walked out to the foyer where Arthur opened the door for them.

I think this was my bottom. Despite all my efforts millions of people were going to die. The misery and pointlessness of it shook me. I even wondered why God was letting this happen.

Doctor Harold did not have a monopoly on the weather service. Word of the next imminent disaster leaked out as Blair drove back to London. One of Doctor Harold’s colleagues talked.

Peter Blair felt terrible about dumping this problem on me after my spectacular success with the rain problem. Reporters were waiting for him when he got back to London. After reviewing the problem he said, “I am reminded of King Lear. ‘Before such sacrifices the gods themselves burn incense.’ If Mrs. Hartley can solve this one cults will worship her. Poor Theresa! When her story is written it will be said her adversary was not people in the world but the world itself.”
