“It … is meant to sound that way?” Nico asked with a wince as Gray’s band launched into a screechy guitar intro.

“Yep,” I replied with a grin, watching as his hands twitched like he wanted to cover his ears. “It’s called metal,” I informed him. “And it’s gleefully loud.”

“You get used to it,” Jack told him, taking a sip from his beer. He looked a bit better, the shadows under his eyes not quite so pronounced. I’d made him sleep for an hour this afternoon.

“Moon and stars,” Nico hissed with the tone of a vicious curse as Rhiannon started singing. She wasn’t a songbird by any means but she had an alright voice and she was passionate enough to captivate the audience. Her cherry-red hair swung as she took an impromptu head-bang break between the verse and chorus. That was the one thing that pissed me off about her—she did it all the fucking time, every fucking song. “Why is she so angry?” Nico asked me, his black eyes blown wide.

“Politics, sexism, police brutality, injustice, wars, the treatment of refugees,” I listed off on my fingers. “I think this one’s about a racist slur someone threw at her the other month.” I grinned viciously. “I hit his head against the bar of the Moonlight—haven’t seen him since. I’ve got a special line in this one, wait for it.”

“And then I beheld a black rider, and her name was vengeance,” Rhiannon sung-shouted. “Leather gleaming like a star, she slammed his head against the bar…”

Nico blinked at the band, and then blinked at me. “You are quite violent.”

“Says the guy who took out Scarlett Bitch and her friends yesterday.” I smirked. “Having second thoughts about being pack?”

“No,” he replied so savagely I knew he took offence at me suggesting otherwise.

I patted his shoulder. Slight apology. “Good.”

As the band played and Cas and Jack speculated about who was the secret judge for this Battle of The Bands, I let my mind wander. I knew Gray’s eyes were on me even as he drummed hard and fast enough to coat himself in a sheen of sweat, but I couldn’t stop thinking about my parents, the pack I’d grown up with who didn’t know they were shifters, the very big chance they were running from something. And that something could draw me in now, could be why all the rogues were after me—not just because I was in season or because of this power in my blood.

I sighed, my head starting to ache. I tapped Cas’s arm and leaned over to shout, “I’m going outside. I need some air that doesn’t smell of sweat and smoke machine.”

He nodded, concern sparking in his silver eyes. “Not alone,” he said. Ordered.

I tried not to sigh and jerked my head at Jack. He didn’t like this place or the band—he wouldn’t mind leaving. Besides, I hadn’t had the chance to thank him for the bacon sandwich properly. Making out in the alley beside The Cellar sounded like a good idea to me.
