Chapter Five

Things became smoother after Lydell and Emmie's date. No longer plagued by the fear that his lies would separate him from his mate, Lydell still found himself craving Emmie's presence every moment of every day. Of course, it wasn't perfect. They still lived in separate cities, and the long-distance relationship thing wasn't easy on either of them. The bond between them made it both easier and infinitely more torturous.

Meeting Emmie's friend Rainbow had helped, up to a point. Lydell's first impression of Rainbow—that he cared deeply about Emmie and appreciated a genuine mate bond—had been confirmed later, when they'd been able to sit down and talk at leisure. Once, when Emmie hadn't been around, Rainbow had actually pulled Lydell aside and hugged him, tearfully thanking him for bringing something so powerful in Emmie's life.

"I've been so worried about him," Rainbow had confessed. "He and I have been together for most of our lives and my move to Ford's pack... I just hate the thought of him being alone."

Rainbow hadn't outright stated it, but he had hinted to the fact that he wanted Emmie to move in to Ford Knight's pack. Apparently, that had been the plan before Emmie had met Lydell. Lydell was beginning to suspect that it meant he was invited as well. This was confirmed when Rainbow handed him a simple business card with Ford Knight's name and email address.

"For when you're ready," he said with a smile.

Lydell knew that Emmie had only told Rainbow bits and pieces from what he himself had shared with his beautiful human. However, it didn't take a genius to figure out something wasn't right about a werewolf without a pack. Lydell would not be surprised if he found out Alpha Knight had looked into his past to make sure he wasn't anyone suspicious. He should have probably minded more than he did, but it was hard to begrudge anyone anything when faced with Rainbow's obvious warmth.

He wasn't the only one to fall victim to human charm. Emmie visited him too, and proved to be just as impossibly irresistible as his friend—even to people other than Lydell. Before the first visit, Lydell had been nervous, since it meant he had to introduce his mate to his best friend. He needn't have worried.

Leif and Emmie hit it off almost instantly. The moment Lydell made the introductions, Emmie smiled brightly and extended his hand. "I hear you're part of the reason why Lydell and I met. Thank you."

Leif looked a little dumbstruck at Emmie's enthusiasm—he had been skeptical upon hearing of Emmie's easy acceptance of the original plan to sabotage MMO—but he gradually relaxed. Even someone as jaded as Leif couldn't resist Emmie's honesty and sheer exuberance.

Soon, Emmie was wriggling out all sorts of details out of Leif, although he tactfully evaded anything that could have made Leif's hackles rise. He also made tentative plans to reboot the Internet presence of Lydell and Leif's business.

Despite Emmie's kindness, Lydell still felt guilty about the original plan.
