Andi helped Emily out of the car and led her up the front step to her house. She took the key that Emily held out and unlocked the door. Once inside Andi led her to her bedroom and sat her down on the bed. Emily was definitely feeling the effects of the alcohol. “Can you change your clothes by yourself?” Andi asked her as he pulled a tee shirt and sweat pants from Emily’s dresser.
“I think so.” Emily’s words were slurred. “I’ve been changing my clothes like a big girl since I was three.” She giggled. “I need to check on Mindy first.”
“You change your clothes. I’ll go check on Mindy.” Andi closed the door quietly as she left the room.
Andi was gone for a few minutes. She knocked lightly on Emily’s door upon her return.
“Who is it?” Emily said a little too loudly. She giggled again.
“Very funny,” Andi said, as she opened the door. Emily was sitting on the bed with the tee shirt on. The sweat pants were still in the same spot Andi had left them. Her strapless black dress was crumpled on the floor. Andi picked it up and laid it neatly across the chair next to the bed.
“I think I’m going to get sick.” Emily started to get up but sat back down, leaned forward and threw up.
Andi went into her bathroom and returned with a towel and a wet washcloth. She wiped Emily’s face with the washcloth and gently wiped it again with the towel. She placed the towel over the mess on the floor and returned to the bathroom, this time coming out with a glass of water for Emily.
“Drink this,” she told Emily. Emily began to cry. “Oh, honey, it’s all right. You’re okay,” Andi told her rubbing her back.
Emily sipped the water as Andi held the glass for her.
“It’s right here if you want more,” Andi told her as she put the glass of water on the nightstand. “Okay? Now can you stand for a second while I get the blankets moved?” Emily nodded. Andi helped her to her feet and held her in place while she reached over pulling back the blanket and bed spread. “Now lie down here. That’s right.” Andi pulled the blanket up around Emily.
She cleaned up the mess on the hardwood floor using the towel and wash cloth, and went into the kitchen, returning with wet paper towels and spray cleaner to finish the job. Emily watched her.
“I’m sorry,” she said as more tears rolled down her cheeks. “I just wanted us to have a good time.”
Andi gave her a reassuring smile. “We did have a good time…right up ‘til the puking part. Up until then, it was a wonderful time.” Andi smiled at Emily, but more tears fell. Andi brushed the hair from Emily’s face. “It’s okay, Emily, honest.” She wiped Emily’s face again with a clean wet washcloth. She leaned over and kissed Emily gently on the forehead before shutting the light and leaving the room, this time leaving the door ajar.
