CHAPTER TWELVE

That next morning found me parked in a chair, staring out my window with a cookie I’d made the night before half-eaten. The sun had barely crested the horizon, and Shakespeare was still asleep on the foot of my bed. I was dressed, my shoes on, and I was ready for whatever was going to happen. Who knew what that would be, but my gut told me today was the day. I’d been up long enough to have my third cup of strong coffee, when I heard the screech of often-used brakes on a big vehicle.

I looked out of my apartment window, and the alley below came into view. A bread truck was parked in front of the door, and the driver was unloading crates of freshly baked bread. The smell of the freshly baked goods filled the alley, making my mouth water. The driver was smiling as he spoke to Mr. Vickers, who stood in the cafe’s back doorway. The owner looked please with his order and handed the driver a tip.

This was it! I rushed down the stairs to meet the delivery guy. Mr. Vickers had already disappeared inside by the time I’d made it outside.

“Excuse me!” I called breathlessly. “Can you hang on for a minute?”

The driver was younger than I thought, now that I was close, clean shaven with short hair. He held out a loaf of fresh bread. “This what you’re looking for?”

“No,” I said somewhat regretfully. After all, it was fresh bread. Mouth watering, I continued, “I was actually hoping for some information. Did you happen to see anything the other night last week when you made your delivery? Maybe about three in the morning? A man here in the alley?” I gave him my most winning smile.

The driver shrugged. “I haven’t been back here since Monday. Sorry.”

“How about any night this week?” Then I took a stab. “Someone with a green handkerchief.”

It seemed the word green had an effect because the driver swallowed hard. Then he shook his head. “Nope. Didn’t see anything. I’m just here to do my job.”

“Okay, thank you.” My heart sank with disappointment.

But before I turned to go, he stopped me. Maybe my smile had done something after all. “You know, you might want to ask the guy in there.” He jabbed his thumb in the direction of the Jitterbug Cafe. “He’s been here a while. He might know something.”

If only he knew I’d tried. “Thank you so much. That helps.”

“Good, good.” He glanced at the ground and then back at me. “So you think you might want to meet me later for a drink?”

Drat. The smile had worked too well. “I’m sorry. I work at night.” This time my smile was awkward, and with a little wave goodbye I hurried toward the Jitterbug Cafe. Maybe it was time to try again.

There was the owner, talking with a woman who appeared to be a hostess. I tried the front door and saw it was locked.

The owner looked up, and I waved.
