CHAPTER SEVEN
THEY HAD been traveling through the rainforest for hours before Slade held up his hand.
âIf you hear the Mali-Mali,â Brionny panted, âI donât want to know about it.â
âStuartâ I think I know where we are!â
She would have laughed, but she didnât have the energy. âSo do I. Weâre smack in the middle of a big blank space on the map.â
âI read something about a mining company that came in here a few years ago.â
âSo?â
âSo, our luck may be improving.â
This time she did laugh. âFrom what, McClintoch? Desperate to just plain awful?â
Slade pushed a tendril of damp hair back from her smudged face. âCan you hang in a little longer?â
As if there were a choice, she thought. âSure,â she said, and followed after him, deeper into the jungle.
Miles later, she came staggering around a bend and stumbled into him.
âSlade,â she moaned, âI canât go another step. Donât you think the Mali-Mali must have given up by now? If they were still after us, theyâd haveââ
âListen!â
âListen to what? I donâtâ¦â Brionny frowned. âWhat is that?â
âWater,â Slade said, grinning like a schoolboy. âRunning water. If Iâm right, itâs a branch of the river.â
âHere?â It was too much to hope for. âButâbut it canât be.â
âThat mining report mentioned a tributary thatâs supposed to cut through the forest somewhere in this vicinity.â Slade took her hand and they moved forward. âItâs not on the map so I wouldnât have wasted time searching for it, but going this distance cross-country may have put us right in line forââ
âOh, Sladeâlook!â Ahead, a brown stream arrowed between sloping banks of dense vegetation. And tucked snugly against the nearest bank was a small, tin-roofed structure. âA house!â Laughter bubbled from Brionnyâs throat. She turned and went spinning into Sladeâs arms. âThat means people, and a radio, and a boatââ
He shook his head. âDonât expect miracles, sweetheart. Itâs probably just an old supply shed.â
Her face fell a little, but she kept smiling. âItâs still a miracle. The river, and a roof over our heads for the nightâwe can stay the night, canât we?â
He hadnât planned on it. Sunset was still hours away. If he worked fast, there was time to cut down some saplings, lash them together to form a raftâbut how much further could he push Brionny? Sheâd already shown more courage and stamina than any woman heâd ever known.
She was probably right. If the Mali-Mali hadnât caught up to them by now, surely it meant theyâd given up.
He smiled. âOK. Weâll get a good nightâs rest. First thing tomorrow morning, weâll build ourselves a raft.â
âA raft.â She sighed happily. âAnd then, Italpa.â
âYeah. Weâre almost home free,â Slade said, with just a shade more conviction than he felt. He put his hand under her chin, dipped his head, and brushed his mouth over hers. âTo success.â
Their eyes met, and something deep inside his gut knotted. Slowly, he bent to her again, giving her time to make the choiceâand she did. Brionny gave a little sigh, tilted her head back, and offered him her lips.
