I woke from a drugged slumber the next morning to drag myself in to work. Endless forms needed to be completed detailing the fiasco from the previous night. I whispered my formal statement into the recorder in one of the interrogation rooms. I knew the disastrous events, as well as having left my charge open to an assassination attempt, would be noted as a negative on my record. I couldn’t be demoted too far, though. Like all the detail, I was bred for this job, and it would be my job until I died.
The news had been full of footage of the talks and of the events on Savea’s—no, Her Radiance Savea’s—planet, and her kingdom in particular. Her father, the ruler of the southern continent, had died, leaving her, his primary heir, to assume the throne. Seeing only her stricken face from the night before, I closed down the news feed after the first few stories scrolled past. I ached to wrap my arms around her, to comfort her, but she’d already left. She would be crowned when her transport reached Helion planetary space. She hadn’t looked back or said goodbye.
Like a true member of the servant class, I had been forgotten and allowed to fade into the background. I was an Eusive, after all, good at being invisible. I just… I had thought better of her.
My wrist monitor buzzed and I pushed the button for the comm.
“Sec Anais, please report to Briefing Room Three.”
I scooted back from my desk and left to search out the large conference room on the floor above.
Three members of the detail stood outside the door. Sec Davis opened it for me. The room was empty save for Councilor Armen and Savea, both seated at the head of the long, carved table. The Councilor cleared his throat, frowning, and rapped his knuckles on the glass top. Savea remained composed, no longer the sparkling jewel from the night before, but dressed conservatively in a light, buttoned-up suit. She smiled and my heart beat hard against my ribs. My breath stuttered in my chest and I wanted to rush to her, take her in my arms. But…what was she still doing here?
She patted the tabletop in front of the chair next to her.
I bowed low and pulled the chair away from the table, perching on the edge of the seat. I had so many questions crowding my tongue. Why wasn’t she on the fast transport? Why hadn’t she told me she was more than a diplomat? Had she come to say goodbye?
But I didn’t speak.
Councilor Armen’s eyebrows drew together and he tapped the table nervously.
Savea—I needed to stop thinking of her so informally—laid her palms on the table and gazed at me steadily.
“Anais, I’m going to ask you a question, and I want you to give an honest answer.”
I nodded. “Of course, Your Radiance.”
She smiled at the honorific, but the expression straightened on her lips. “I wanted to ask if you’d consider coming back to Helion with me.
