Chapter 8
Packing his things, Nathan didn’t think about anything but getting his clothing from the drawers to the suitcase. If he let his mind wander, say to the night of the big Event, as he’d been calling it, he’d die. Just up and die. It was bad enough that he couldn’t control his dreams of that night, but during the day, he had to focus on whatever he was doing to keep from just letting his heart stop beating.
He was sure that it had that night. Several times. But he’d kept coming back, his body coming around just as the vampire had told him he would. Nathan was positive that no one had ever begged to die as many times as he had. Looking at the paperwork that he had to mail today, he wondered why no one had ever thought to take his children from him before now. He’d been a horrific father.
The man, Elliot, had shown him what he’d been like to live with. The torture that he’d inflicted on his own family. Even his first wife, the mother of his kids, had been horribly abused by him until she could no longer take it. Killing herself had been her only way out, he realized then. Had she not taken a bullet to her head, then he’d still be beating her up, still hurting the kids, and more than likely would have knocked her up a few more times too. All because he could.
The Event had happened that night, and while he really wanted to think of it as a fluke, that the vampire would never return, he knew better. The entire night, while he was making him suffer in ways that he’d made his family suffer, Elliot had taught him a great many things. Like his abilities were much stronger than Nathan’s need to live.
At first it had started out with the life of his children. Not the way that he might have thought, should someone had said that to him. No, this was how they’d been conceived. How they had suffered when he’d beaten their mother while she carried them. Each time he’d hit her during that time, every time he’d been close enough to slap her or knock her to the ground, he’d done so. And the baby that he’d planted had felt every one of them. And as part of the Event, he had too.
Sitting down for a moment, he needed to rest. His body was still hurting. More than that, he was mentally exhausted as well. He could not imagine, nor did he want to again, the pain and suffering that his children had endured. But his wife’s—he relived that every time he closed his eyes.
She had been making his breakfast that morning. It had been his favorite. He knew now that she had planned it that way, to try and make amends so that he’d not hurt her again. Little Hayley had been sitting in her high chair, enjoying her breakfast of toast and an egg.
