For the first time in my life, I was actually looking forward to going back to school. I hadn’t talked to Esther much since the first week of the holidays, and I had a lot to catch her up on – most of it about Ngatai. After months of her talking my ear off about boys and complaining that I only ever talked about horses, I finally had something to contribute.

But there was no sign of her at our usual meeting place for morning break, and her desk was empty when I arrived at third period Biology. I took my usual seat next to Alice, who ignored me as per usual. I got my books out of my bag and surreptitiously checked my phone again, just in case Esther had sent a reply, but there was still nothing. I’d just dropped my bag on the floor at my feet when I heard her voice, and looked up to see her standing in the classroom doorway, talking to Callie.

What the—?

Those two were supposed to hate each other. I watched as Esther laughed at something Callie said, the two of them looking as thick as thieves. Mrs Miller came to the door and cleared her throat pointedly. Callie simpered a smile at the teacher as Esther came into the room, and Mrs Miller shut the door firmly behind her.

My friend didn’t look at me on her way to her seat, but I spun around as she sat down.

“Hey.”

She glanced up casually. “Oh hi, Susannah.”

“What was that about?”

Esther blinked innocently. “What d’you mean?”

“Okay, eyes front and let’s get started,” Mrs Miller said loudly. “We’ve got a lot to cover this term, and we need to crack on.”

I turned back reluctantly, trying to focus on the whiteboard at the front of the room. Clearly something had changed during the past two weeks, but what? And how? And why?

Most importantly, if Esther was back in with Callie again, where would that leave me?
