I thought Spain had some of the most beautiful women in the world. I was in awe of their bronzed, flawless skin. I admired their big eyes and beautiful hair. I was an admirer of their beauty, warmth, and charm.
Knowing all of this still did not prepare me for the mesmerizing performance of a flamenco dancer.
Weeks had passed by, and it was nearly time to leave again. Another country, another farewell. There were many things I wanted to do in Spain, some more than others. I had not seen a live flamenco dance before.
For my last night in Spain, I wanted to see a flamenco performance in a theatre. The shows were very popular in Valencia and would sell out immediately. I knew it would be hard to get tickets.
I told my hotel manager about my dilemma, and he was more than happy to give me tickets to a show. The same show was fully booked months in advance.
I gushed at his hospitality and kindness. He said it was the least he could do for his best customer.
The other staff members had told him how much they enjoyed having me there. He surprised me by telling me this. During my stay, I asked many hotel staff members to teach me a phrase in Spanish. I asked them several times, but I could not replicate the warmth of their tones, no matter how much I practiced.
I would ask them to repeat the phrases, not so much, I suspected, to learn the words. I asked them to hear them speak their beautiful, romantic language.
I thought I troubled them all. I told the manager this, but he just smiled and told me to enjoy the show.
The show was going to be in the Palau de la Musica. The hotel manager must have pulled some strings to get these tickets. The Palace of Music was where you expected serious opera performances, and it was considered as one of the most important concert halls in Europe. The Palace of Music was home to the Orchestra of Valencia. The venue itself was by the river, a pretty expanse of water, and the nearby park, the Garden of the Turia, had fountains dancing in the summer heat.
The exterior was an enormous glass dome along the Turia river-bed. A great glass waterfall that poured into the river. The interior was equally impressive as the outside. A glass panel barely separated the outside from the interior, so the trees seemed to be inside the foyer.
It was a sold-out show, and the auditorium was packed. Everyone was excited for the coming performance. They were saying how it was the best flamenco seen anywhere.
I let their energy build up my excitement. Secretly, it was what I hoped people said about my acting. I was going to take notes of the performance. I wanted my audience to be equally excited about my movie releases.
The room went dark. A spotlight appeared in the middle of the stage.
There was a single dancer standing there, her face hidden by her graceful arms.
