Chapter 7

“Mistress?” Ariannona opened her eyes and looked at the tiny figure in front of her. He’d been waking her off and on over the past...well, she had no idea how long it had been going on, but she was too tired to care any longer. Her body was spent. “Mistress? They have come here.”

“All right, Izic.” She closed her eyes again, not caring what he was talking about. “When you come back the next time, I wish for you to bring me a rose. You know where they are hidden.”

“We have them. And we know how to use them.” The voice wasn’t Izic’s. She wasn’t even sure whose it was, but she nodded. The rose had been both her blessing and her curse. But it was magical. “Wake enough to take some of the broth, love. We have to help you.”

“I’ve no need of food or broth, Izic. Please, just leave me in peace.” The man said no and she looked up at him. “Elam? What kind of trick is this?”

“No tricks. Come on, love. Drink some of this. And I must say, that is the most beautiful rose garden I’ve ever seen. My mom would have loved it.” She tried to sit up, but her body was too weak, her arms not able to hold her up for long. “Casdon has gone to get a net to carry you back to the house with. I wasn’t sure that you’d be able to hold onto him while he flew.”

“I’m dying.” He told her not if he could help it. “What are you doing here? I thought you ill.”

“I was. For a little while anyway. But then I had a long talk with my mom and she straightened me out. Here, eat this.” The spoon was shoved in her mouth and she had no choice but to swallow or spit it back at him. And that was sounding tempting. “If you spit it out, we’re just going to be here longer. Now drink this up so I can get you ready to go.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you.”

He said nothing but put another spoonful of the rose soup in her mouth. She had to admit, it was delicious, but she was mad at him, or she thought she should have been, and tried to turn her head when he put another spoonful at her lips.

When he said her name, she turned to look at him. Ariannona thought he looked defeated. And for some reason, that hurt her. He watched her, the spoon in his hand, the soup steaming in the other hand, and she wanted to hold him. Then he started to speak.

“I spoke to my long dead mother today. Did you know that was possible?” She said that she’d learned that anything was possible if you wanted it badly enough. “Yes, that’s true. But to be honest with you, I really didn’t want to speak to her. I wanted to...well, that’s beside the point.”

“You wished to talk to her because you thought her not able to give you answers you did not want to hear.
