Thoth, God of Wisdom, Learning, Arts, Magic and Scribe to the Gods

Thoth also manifested under many names: Tehuti, Djehuty, Tetu and Zehuti to name a few. His cult temple was in the Delta at Hermopolis. As the power of his cult grew, some myths were re-written to proclaim him as the creator God. In the guise of the great Ibis, he was supposed to have laid the egg from which Ra was born. Some say he created himself through the power of his tongue. This is a ghostly presentiment of the beautiful opening of St. John’s gospel in the Bible; “In the beginning was the word, and the Word was with God and God was the Word.” Thoth is credited with being the inventor of hieroglyphics, arithmetic and astrology, and is usually depicted as carrying a pen and ink or a stylus and palette. He almost always has the head of an Ibis surmounted by the lunar crescent. His other sacred animal is the baboon, a shape he often assumes as well. He is a lunar deity and is called “he who balances”; a reference to his role as the record keeper in the Underworld when the deceased are judged by Osiris. He is known as the epitome of justice, the “Lord of Time” and the “Accountant of the Years.” His wife, Seshat, assumes the duties of Ma’at at the judging of the deceased.

There is an air of mystery about him as he is considered to be the author of a book containing “all the secrets of the universe.” Owning this book would make the possessor the most powerful sorcerer in the universe. It is called The Book of Thoth or the “emerald tablets of Thoth” and it is said to be hidden in a secret chamber near the Great Pyramid. One of the secrets it will supposedly reveal is that it will prove all the gods come from the lost city of Atlantis. Debate about whether these tablets really exist still rages to this day.
