He wanted to throw the phone against the wall but restrained himself. So close! He’d nearly had the answer to the reason Roger was so interested in both Peter and Pippa. But the term orisha was new to him.

Remembering the quick introduction from Ben last night, Maxim rose and headed out of the suite, determined to visit the library. Perhaps there was something on record there?

In the main foyer he stopped and re-oriented himself before heading up the stairs, then turned to the right.

Two large, black doors were tastefully tagged with small brass plaques. The library. He pushed in and came to a stop when a woman at a desk glared. “We close in twenty minutes. Make your selections quickly,” she growled.

He cleared his throat. “I’m looking for something on orishas.”

She frowned, and he could swear he saw fur instead of eyebrows. “The electronic catalogues are down. The only way we can find them is to do a manual search.”

He hovered at the desk, thinking that she was talking another language. “I don’t understand.”

The woman sighed heavily. “Come with me.” She exited the desk area and traipsed down a hall. On the wall was a set of small drawers, wooden with brass handles. “These are the manual search cards.”

He’d never heard of such things, but he had a vague recollection of similar things from his school days. “I don’t…” He frowned. His English was good, but this? He’d need to do more than simply rely on the catalogue cards. “How do I spell…?”

“English isn’t your first language, right? Let’s see…” The woman shook her head. “Oisha?”

Maxim frowned. “O-rish-a, I think.” How the hell was he supposed to know how to spell it?

“Have you tried using your phone to work out how to spell it?” she drawled, and Maxim felt stupid.

“I…” He grabbed the phone from his pocket. “Would it do that?”

Now the librarian looked at him as if he were from Mars, and Maxim felt heat stain his cheeks.

“Maybe not,” she said. “Your accent, while it isn’t as strong as some I’ve heard, would probably interfere with the request for spelling. Is your search urgent?” Once more he looked at the woman, noting the pale tinge of her skin.

“I don’t know. Maybe not.” Maxim didn’t like being in this position where he was lost and at sea, and for the first time in a long time, he acknowledged that he was regaining the control he’d long ago ceded, and not being in control irked after such a long time of submissive behaviour on his part.

“Leave it with me. I’ll be back on tonight at eight o’clock. I’ll see what information I can find for you and have a file ready for you in the morning. Just come back to the desk and let me copy down the information on your card before you go.”

He trotted behind the woman to the front of the library and handed her the swipe card he’d been issued. He waited as she entered the details of his search into a notepad.
