CHAPTER 13

Abruised and battered Jake made his way over to Ally, still seated on the bench seat by the patio. The setting sun cast a brilliant orange and pink reflection across the ocean’s surface. Its golden spectacle danced beautifully as it quickly slipped beneath the constant horizontal horizon. Gently, Jake placed his hand on his best friend and cousin’s shoulder, causing her to startle ever so slightly.

“Hey there, stranger,” he teased.

“Oh my gosh!” exclaimed Ally as she jumped up and rushed to hug her cousin. He winced at the pressure on his injured torso and rib cage, still tender from the earlier beating he’d received. “Oh, I’m so sorry,” Ally apologized, gently releasing him. Jake joined her on the seat, and together they gazed out at the blue ocean in a moment of relief and contemplation. Ally softly clasped Jake’s hand, allowing tears to trickle down her cheeks.

“I’m so sorry, Jake. It’s all my fault. I’m so sorry you got caught up in this. If anything had happened to you, I would never have forgiven myself. I’m just relieved you’re okay and here. Actually, how did you even end up here?”

Jake laughed weakly, wiping away her tears. He wrapped his arm around her, and she nestled into his side. He then began to recount the story of how he ended up at the beach mansion, from start to finish in his habitual tradition.

“They ambushed me right in front of the bank, hurling me into their waiting van. It appeared they had premeditated the entire operation, as if they had foreknowledge of my whereabouts or something.” Ally was keenly aware of how they had acquired this information; Damien had glimpsed a vision of the future, which he used to his advantage.

He proceeded with more detail, informing Ally how they transported him to a warehouse located near a dump. He endured a brutal beating and relentless interrogation as they desperately tried to extract information about Ally and her father.

“I tried to send you a coded message during the Facetime call, which I’m gathering you received, given that I overhead Damien mention Georgia and Cameron would be on their way soon. It was like he knew what was going to happen before it happened, weird right?”

Ally nodded, Damien’s powerful abilities shining through, yet she saw no reason to further unsettle her cousin with this piece of information.

“As soon as they started to move me, I knew that was my only chance.” Jake shivered a little, his grip on Ally tightening as he recounted the moment of his escape.

“We pulled up, and the driver cut the engine, and without hesitation, I launched myself at the first guy sitting directly across from me. I headbutted him, then managed to break my wrist ties against a sharp metal post. After that, I punched the second guy square in the jaw. He retaliated by shoving me into the front of the van. The punch wasn’t enough, so I had to grab the UHF cord and wrap it around his neck, and I just pulled as hard as I could.
