Chapter 15
Dinner with Lilith had been nice, but now she had to face going home to an empty house. The early autumn weather had been fairly pleasant and mild, but that didnât mean the evenings didnât start drawing in dark earlier and earlier. Usually, that would have stopped Echoe from going for a bit of a wander. In the light of day, people might have tolerated her chair, but sheâd often found the night time world was a very different place. Granted most of those whoâd made her feel that way had clearly been intoxicated, but it didnât really make her feel any better about it. It did, however, mean she guided herself along a path away from any local pubs. For a while she wasnât totally sure where it was she was heading, then she found herself outside of Osa Rosemaryâs place.
For a long couple of minutes, she debated whether or not she should go in; after all, it was probably bedtime for a lot of the kids, and she knew how difficult it could be getting small children to settle down. She was just about to turn and continue on with her journey when something convinced her she should go inside. The impulse was so strange and so sudden she couldnât help but glance around, just to make sure no one else had planted that feeling there. For half a second she thought she saw some shadowy figure watching her. But before her eyes could adjust enough to make them out, they melted back into the shadows of the alleyway theyâd been poking out of.
A burst of anger moved through her as something told her it was probably Mika, or if not him one of the other Maino. After all, sheâd had enough anecdotal evidence to know they were capable of at least a primitive form of telepathic influence. That alone was enough to make her decide to continue on with her journey, but just as she did Rosemary poked her head out of her front door.
âEchoe, I thought that was you,â she pulled herself outside and made her way towards the gate, âwhat are you doing here?â
âI⦠Iâm not sure really,â she shot her an embarrassed smile, âI just felt like I needed to go for a walk⦠clear my head a little.â
âYes, well I suppose you have a lot on your mind dear, what with everything thatâs been going on.â
âHow⦠err⦠I guess Cleo must have told you.â
âDonât worry, she wasnât gossiping, I wouldnât stand for that. But she is concerned about you; so much so she debated whether or not now was the right time to⦠mention certain things.â
âThe fact sheâs pregnant you mean?â Echoe shifted her gaze away. âThat did come up whilst she and Ner were telling Picco all about their new place.â
âBelieve me, she was in two minds about whether or not that whole conversation was a good idea right now. I hope you donât think less of me dear, but I was the one who told her to go ahead with it.
