In the middle of the night, she startled awake. A figure stood in the doorway, watching her. She ran a trembling hand over her eyes. The side of her bed dipped with Rourke’s weight.

“Why’d you come back?”

“I have a contract in my hand. The binding terms are between us, made official with Flyn’s signature.”

She sat and grabbed a pillow, hugging its softness to her chest. Why did she have a bad feeling about this new contract of his?

“The kill order doesn’t die with Trace. A kill order is scrapped with your death.”

He turned on the light and set the contract and a pen in front of her.

“I’m offering a lifetime commitment for you living free. No more tunnels and hiding beneath headgears and padded uniforms. No more living a double life, Echo.”

She scanned the contract. She lived free and so did he, free to be with another woman while she belonged to him. Understanding dawned on her. “You’re punishing me for who my father is.” And for a crime she didn’t commit.

“As Vicious’ child, you’re guilty of all of his transgressions against hunters and humanity. It’s time you owe up to the crime for all to see and know Snow lives.”

“And if I don’t sign?”

“You said you’d bleed red if you could take away my hatred and my resentment. Or did I hear wrong?”

He got her good. Echo signed. For her father’s sins, she would repent for a lifetime, existing side by side with a man who hated and resented her.

She set down the pen and met his steely gaze. “Satisfied?”

He stood, rolled up the contract and tucked it in his back pocket. “More than you’ll ever realize. Now get dressed. I’m taking you to headquarters.”
