CHAPTER
TWENTY-FOUR
Fawn
I woke up in a place I didnât recognize and with memories I didnât like that I had. The majority of them had been with Wolf, his arms around meâ¦
I sat up, feeling drugged. Iâd cried myself to sleep last night, and I remembered that. I also remembered a voice telling me things would be okay. Heâd told me what I was feeling was scary, but Iâd be all right. Iâd get through it.
Swallowing, I felt a dry mouth and squinted into sunlight. I recognized this room as the one Iâd escaped into last night, but I had no idea Iâd been in a bedroom. I was on a bed and under sheets.
Why was I here?
I pushed the bedding off. Wolf obviously had let me sleep, but I shouldnât be here. I had no idea why heâd been here, or how he found me. I also had no idea why heâd left me here in this house.
Because he was a jerk.
He hadnât been acting like one last night. Heâd been that voice telling me things. Heâd been comforting me, assuring me. But what I didnât understand was why, and my attempts to get up only made me lie back down. I had a massive headache. Probably from all the crying. I lay for a second with my face in the bedding, and the sharp scent caused me to sit up instantly.
It smelled like him, the bed. One side smelled like me, but the other smelled like Wolf.
Had he stayed here with me?
I didnât like the thought of it, and this time, I made myself get up. My phone was nearby, and I got that. I had no service, and a line being out due to the storm wouldnât surprise me.
Fuck.
Iâd stayed in a foreign place. In fact, the exact place that had been the subject of a fight I may or may not have been a part of. I hadnât been throwing the punches, but my friend had.
Bru.
He was probably worried sick. Iâd told him Iâd find his sister and Bow, then ended up collapsed on the floor, weak.
Rushing, I left the room, trying to make calls on the way. Nothing went through, and something unusual was how quiet this house was. There was discarded trash on the floor, paper plates and cups, but no people. I hadnât been to a ton of parties since Iâd gone to college, but typically, one would step over a body or two if one stayed late enough. That just came with the territory, but this place was empty.
Mostly.
Some light singing came from the kitchen, and my phone just about left my hands at the sight of Bow Reed. She was pulling toast out of a toaster, then buttering it.
Umâ¦
I walked casually, slowly. This was very unusual, and I was so quiet I scared the shit out of Bow. She jumped, but when she realized I was the one creeping around, she laughed.
âOh my gosh, Fawn. You scared me.â She chuckled, still in her party clothes.
