CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Audrey

I’m on pins and needles as I wait for Harper to return. I tried my best to stall her as long as I could to give Brady time to return Kelsey’s phone and to give Harper time to get to Bryce’s place. But I have a terrible feeling this will go horribly wrong. And I feel like shit for doing this to her. At the same time, I think it’s for the best.

She doesn’t deserve to be cheated on, and she and her kid will be better off without Bryce. There’s no way he would be a good father. He only cares about himself, and him being with Kelsey while he’s still with Harper is proof of that.

The knock on the door makes me jump out of my skin, my heart pounding as I clutch my chest, sucking in a breath. I hesitantly go to the door and pull it open.

Brady enters the apartment, dragging a hand over his face and sighing. “It’s done. I gave her the phone with no issues.”

I let out the breath I’d been holding as I shut the door behind him. “That’s good.”

I turn around to see him removing his hands from his face, and he’s looking at me seriously, regret pooling in his eyes. “Audrey, I’m not feeling good about this. We should’ve just told Harper what was going on.”

I lead him to the sofa and plop down with a sigh, knowing he’s right. But I also know Harper and can recall all the times I tried to warn her about Bryce from the beginning.

Brady sits next to me and is literally on the edge of his seat, his elbows planted on his knees, one of his legs jiggling anxiously as he brings his hands together, as if he’s praying for a good outcome.

I’m trying to stay calm as I sit back and place my hands in my lap, toying with my fingers. “Honestly, if we just told her what was going on, she might not have believed me or wanted to hear it.” I look up at Brady, and our eyes meet as he listens intently. I try to ignore the spike in my pulse as I tear my eyes away and try to remember what I was saying before being hypnotized by his dreamy blue eyes.

Oh right.

I was talking about Harper and her scum of the earth boyfriend. Or hopefully soon, ex-boyfriend. “Bryce has always had this control over her, and not physically, but a type of control that drugs have once someone’s addicted to them. She met him last fall. He came into the ER after being involved in a minor car crash.

“No one was seriously injured, but he and the passengers of the other car came in to get checked out. Harper was the nurse who took care of him, and when she told me about him that night, she mentioned he was checking out another nurse’s ass and blamed it on a concussion when he got caught.
