Chapter 21
The following morning, bartender Vito entered the Forelands Bar through the rear door with his key. It was not uncommon for the lower level of the bar to be vacant when he arrived, but he had noticed Cuddlesâ Kia SUV was missing from its parking space. He went to the front and did some minor clean-up chores and turned on the lights. He needed his cash drawer for the till and decided to go to the office to find it. He climbed the stairs to the second floor and walked into the office. No one was there. He found his cash drawer on her deskâthe usual place when she wasnât there to bring it to him.
The cash drawer was sitting on the desktop with a note detailing the cash amounts and denominations and amounts for the day. As he picked it up to check the figures he noticed something strange on the desk. It was a leather pouch tied with a leather thong. Curious, he set the cash drawer back on the desk and reached for the pouch. Untying the thong he peered inside to see the contents. What he saw amazed him. It was what appeared to be gold nuggets. He poured a few of the nuggets into his hand to admire them. They were heavyâthey had to be gold. Old habits die hard and he lifted four of the nuggets from his palm and dropped them into his pants pocket. He was admiring the rest of the cache when the door opened and Crusher came rushing in. He recognized the pouch in the bartenderâs hand. âClose that back up and put it down,â he ordered, his eyes narrowed and his face stern.
âJust looking, Crusher. I came in to get the cash drawer and was curious when I saw the pouch.â His voice was nervous as he explained and tried to tie the pouch shut.
âGet out of the office, NOW,â ordered the big wrestler.
âOK, OK, Iâm going.â He reached for the cash drawer, but was met by a huge hand and a mean thump to his kidney.
âI said NOW. Keep your hands off anything that doesnât belong to you. Get out.â
âI have to have the cash drawer to open the bar,â said Vito as he reached again for the drawer.
This time Crusher hit his forearm with a heavy blow. He grabbed the bartender by the right shoulder and spun him around. Vito held up a right arm to defend himself but was struck in the stomach by a hardened fist. Vito doubled over only to be struck on the side of the head. As he tried to straighten up he was again hit in the face. As he fell backward, something grabbed his right arm and jerked him upright again. His arm was twisted viciously around to his back, dislocating his shoulder. He began to fall, but was drug out of the office by his injured arm. Crusher dropped him in the hallway. As Vito attempted to stand
