Chapter 19
Gabe had been on lookout for several hours when Aleena and Ethan approached the cave entrance. He was feeling a little ill and wanted to ask Leon to be relieved. When the two had hiked up to the entrance, Gabe met them.
âHow was the training today?â he asked Aleena.
âIt was wonderful. I think Iâm finally starting to get the hang of shooting those things.â She motioned toward the gun Ethan was carrying. âMy hand-to-hand fighting still needs some work though, Iâm afraid. I just canât seem to stop Ethanâs lightning-fast moves.â She looked over at Ethan but refrained from winking.
Ethan wished she wouldnât rub it in like that. A few weeks earlier, heâd told Leon that Aleena wanted to learn to fight, said it would boost her confidence since the Guard slaughtered her family. Leon was hesitant at first, but finally agreed that Ethan could take Aleena out into the forest each day to teach her some basic fighting skills. It was the only excuse he could think of so their daily afternoon excursion into the forest wouldnât draw any attention. The best lies are the ones that are close to the truth.
Aleena dove right into the scheme and used it to subtly make fun of Ethan when he had a particularly bad day. She was attempting to use it as a motivational tool, and so far, it was working fairly well.
âWell, Iâm sure youâll get him next time,â Gabe told her.
She looked at Ethan again, a smirk barely visible on her face. âIâm sure I will, Gabe. I might even be able to teach him a thing or two next time.â
âIâm sure you will.â
Ethan did his best to stay out of this, knowing anything he said would make it worse later. Aleena was a sweet girl but a fearsome teacher. His body ached all over from being slammed to the ground every day, repeatedly.
One day heâd made the mistake of asking her to go easy on him. She looked at him and said, âYou mean like the Guard will go easy on you and your friends?â
Ethan had stupidly responded in sarcasm with âYeah, just like that.â
The rest of that afternoon went down as one of the most painful training sessions heâd ever experienced. Of course, he knew she was rightâthe Guard would show no mercy, and she was slowly building a new resilience in himâhowever, that knowledge certainly didnât help the aches and pains he experienced each night before bed.
Ethan put those thoughts out of his mind and looked at Gabe. âYou arenât looking so well,â he said. âMaybe you should come inside with us and take a break. Iâm sure Leon can assign someone else to your post.â
âI think Iâll do that,â Gabe answered.
The three of them headed into the cave toward the dining cavern. After entering, Gabe split off toward Leon, who was sitting on the far-left side of the room talking with John. Ethan and Aleena found Allison waiting for them in their usual spot.
