The Gladiatrix and the Goblin

Nora Steelhawk needed gold. While she had been training to join the Adventurer’s Guild in Bravura, her family had managed to go deep into debt to the local lord back in Anglesey. She had recently received a letter from her brother that they would lose the farm to the lord unless she managed to raise a hundred gold ducats to repay their debt before the month’s end. It would take almost ten days to reach their rural home back in Anglesey, which meant she had far less than a month to get the coin.

There were two ways of making that much money that quickly. Nora had been told by several rummy men that she had the body for whoring. She certainly had big enough breasts to entice any man. Her cheap plate mail had been hammered into a shape to accommodate her enormous bust and her narrow waist and wide hips similarly drew the leering gaze of men in taverns and in the streets. Some men pretended to admire her long, silky mane of red hair, but such compliments were only a prelude to trying to grope her breasts or stroke her bottom on a barstool.

Nora’s muscular shoulders and large biceps, not to mention her martial skill, held such men at bay. She had the strength of a man, earned from swinging her massive hammer in countless hours of practice.

Nora could make the money on her knees or her back, but her pride, and a promise to her family to avoid such shameful things, ensured she would never choose that route. There was another path before her. A more difficult path in many ways. But one that could bring honor along with the coin she needed.

That path went through the arena of Linz. But there was a problem.

“Ten gold. You do not have entry fee, you do not fight,” said the burly arena master. He looked Nora over and stroked his beard. “I could give you money for something else. This could pay for fight.”

Nora’s face burned with shame. She was disgusted by this fat pig of a man and would sooner sell her body in an alleyway than give in to his predatory propositions.

“Not happening, Klaus,” she said, crossing her arms against her breastplate.

“Mmmmm, too proud? Silly girl. Well, there is another way.” He walked over to a shelf and returned with a scroll. “Slave contract.”

“You want me to be your slave?” She recoiled from the idea.

“No, no, this is the fight wager,” said Klaus, unrolling the scroll onto the scuffed countertop. “You sign your name and your entry fee is waived. But you must agree to be the slave of your opponent for one week if you are defeated.”

“And if I win?”

“Ten gold,” said Klaus.

So all she had to do was win one fight and then she would have the stakes to enter more matches until she had earned back the money. She had seen the sort of scrawny beggars and big drunks who battled in the arena.
