Chapter 15

Duke

“Your what?” I asked.

“Colt is my brother, Duke,” Eden said.

Even though I had her repeat it again, it was like I couldn't process it. Colt was Eden’s brother? How the hell could my best friend have kept something like that from me? I mean, Colt was secretive, sure. But holy fuck, we knew the man had a family somewhere. Well, had a family. He mentioned that his parents had passed a little while back. But we also thought he wasn’t very close with them because he hadn’t taken any time off to go to either of their funerals. At least, not from what I could remember. It wasn’t like the man had reached out during his grieving process or anything.

“I can’t even begin to unpack that,” I said.

“I’m sorry. I know that’s an absolute bomb to drop,” Eden said.

“You think?”

She slipped her legs off me and covered herself even tighter with the blanket she had around her body. She felt exposed. I knew she did. But now, I needed answers. All of them. No matter how tangled the web was and no matter how shocked it left me.

“Was Colt the one that made you leave?” I asked.

“He is, yes,” she said.

“Why? Why did he do that?”

“He thought I was in danger. After I graduated, he figured out my plans to stay around the area and go to a community college. You know, like we talked about. He didn’t like it. Said it wasn't good enough. And he said he could set me up with something better. I told him I didn’t want him to. That I had a life here I wanted to live. I told him I had you.”

“Me?” I asked.

“Yeah. You. Even though I had my suspicions about you being a prospect for the Black Hornets, I got confirmation during that conversation.”

“Why did you have suspicions about it?”

“There was this one afternoon where you can canceled our plans. You know, to stick around after school and hang out. So, instead of going home, I drove into town to get some ice cream. I saw Colt driving away from a diner. I almost couldn't believe my eyes. At that point, I hadn’t seen Colt in years. But, before I went to go follow him, I saw you come out of the diner and get on your bike.”

“Shit,” I murmured.

“Yeah. You had on a blank leather cut, and I’m not an idiot. My suspicions started there. But when I was talking with Colt after he came out of the blue to the house after my graduation, I knew. I knew you were a prospect with his club he had gotten tangled up with and not bothered to tell me at all.”

“I didn’t want you worrying about me.”

“Bullshit. You knew me better than that. You wanted your cake and you wanted to eat it, too. You knew if you told me, it risked me leaving. So, you didn’t. At least own up to that,” she said.

She was right. That was the reason I had kept it from her.
