CONCLUSIONS: Kenzie can afford any of the stolen items. Olivia might have sent the ransom note to get more money to keep up with her friends’ lifestyle. Not sure on Sarina, although her body language shows that she might be getting tired of Kenzie and Olivia like Zora did.

“Emma Cruz is such a—”

I make a little O with my mouth when I hear the word Kenzie uses. I don’t disagree in theory but—yeesh.

“She didn’t only break the yeti’s arm,” Kenzie is saying. “She completely messed up the decorations. They’re way too basic. We’re going for a fun, nostalgic wonderland. Not some cheap, Walmart snow-globe scene.”

“Yeah, and, um, she doesn’t even care that your dad paid for everything,” Sarina puts in.

“She doesn’t. And her family certainly isn’t chipping in,” Kenzie replies with an eye-roll. “Not surprising, based on where she lives. She’s a hiker, not a roller.”

Olivia joins in when the girls laugh, but looks uncomfortable. I can’t help but feel bad for her. Doesn’t Kenzie know that she lives down the hill too, in Cypress? And how is Olivia affording this? Biting my lip, I start calculating what this spa day must have cost Mom. But she has money. Olivia doesn’t seem to. Is Kenzie footing the bill?

I creep forward to see if I can hear better, but the conversation seems to have shifted.

“Do you like this color?” Sarina is saying, stretching her fingers out to show her manicure. “Or is it too orangey? It’s orangey, isn’t it?”

Kenzie tips her glasses down. “Hate to say it, but yeah. Orangey.”

Olivia nods. “Definitely. But I can paint over it. I watched a ton of YouTube videos on how to get a straight polish by starting in the middle, and—”

“Drew!” a voice shouts at epic volume. “Order up for DREW?”

That was . . . less than inconspicuous. Trying to look relaxed, I stroll toward the counter to grab my order. When I turn back, all three girls are staring right at me.

“Hey. I know you,” Olivia Campos says. For a second, I think she’s eyeing me suspiciously. But, based on the knowing looks they trade, I realize that they’re placing me as “that creepy girl who draws skulls.” Or possibly “that girl whose mom ran away with the guidance counselor.” I couldn’t be so lucky as to hope that they’re thinking of me as “the brilliant detective who took down the school’s most notorious cyberbully.”

“Drew,” I remind them.

“What are you doing here?” Kenzie asks bluntly.

“My mom got us a spa treatment,” I say, shifting uncomfortably. With us off campus, in puffy white robes, it doesn’t feel like a prime interrogation moment.

A girl’s gotta try, though. I think up a conversation starter, hoping it sounds natural.

“So, I heard you’re all on the dance committee. How’s that coming?” I try to act nonchalant as I take a long sip of my smoothie.

“Well,” Kenzie says, leaning forward. “You probably heard us talking about Emma. But you’re not going to tell her anything about that, right?”

“Why would I?” I ask.
